How to turn off 3D snaps?

I want to turn off 3D snaps but when I turn it off by un-checking the box in the drafting settings, I still get 3D distances when measuring a straight line distance between objects. How can I turn it off?

Look into the OSNAPZ system variable as this setting variable combined with the ELEVATION system variable control whether distance values are reported as 3D Length or 2D Length.

OSNAPZ =1 and ELEVATION=0 should get you what your after.

Change your OSnapZ variable to 1.

This does not seem to work in 2014. My feature line PI still changes elevation even if I have OSNAPZ = 1 and elevation = 0.

Are you using the MOVE command or just grabbing the grip and snapping it?
OSNAPZ had no effect on grip snaps.

Thank you. So I think you probably can assume what my next question will be.

Any way to disable snap to elevation when snapping grips? I still always use the snap command when using the grips, i.e. end, mid, node, perp, etc.

I don't want to use the move command. 99% of the time I just need to adjust the location of one PI, not move the entire feature line.

Me too.

I'd be glad to have a good method for this.

For anyone still having issues after adjusting the "OSNAPZ" and "ELEVATION" commands as suggested above, press the "F4" key

or

use command "OSNAP" and then select the 3D Object Snap Tab and uncheck the "3D Object Snap On" check-box.

Hope this helps.

Go to the bottom right and click on the OSNAP box in the tool bar and click on the drop carret, select "Object Snap Settings" then select the "3d object snap bar" and uncheck the 3d snap box

I am in Autocad 2017 and am having the same problem. UCS snaps to 3D objects and I can't PERMANENTLY turn it off.  Everything has worked well for years then all of a sudden last week UCS snaps to 3D objects no matter what I do. I have used "osnap", "osnapz", "elevation" & "F4" Any help is appreciated.
