hec-ras import woes

Does anyone here have experience with the Hec-Ras import extension for C3D 2010?

I successfully used the Export function, after discovering the hidden quirks (see my last post).

Now, with my model complete to my satisfaction, the Import function has been finicky, to say the least. I have seen a variety of error messages, but this one is the most common: Visual Basic error: "run-time error '62': Input past end of file"

So far, I have been able to import the WS profile, but no luck on the other components. Does anyone have insight on this?

Thanks in advance

Nothing but problems in 2010.

Personally, I use the EE Hydro HEC-RAS import/export tool.

What HEC-RAW component are you unable to import?

Matt,

Thanks for the quick reply.

What I am most concerned about at this point is the extents of the water surface at each cross section - I would like to delineate the boundary of the flooding on my CAD drawing.

I guess I could manually grab the data from the HEC-RAS export file (which writes export files flawlessly, yet is a free program....) and draw polylines.....but theoretically, the Civil3D extension should do it for me, right????

If you have the profile - you could, using either grading objects or a
corridor, intersect the surface to create your flooding limits.

If you want, send my your GEO and your Civil 3d drawing at the email
address below.

The extension has never done more than connect the dots based on Section
stationing, and based on the reversal complaints in the current build,
I'm not sure I'd trust those without verification.

I'd suggest you use the profile data and a daylight assembly to get
something more appropriately tied to your surface. You may need to edit
for bowties depending on the serpentine of the channel's surface. The
other option is to create a large planar surface from the profile and
projecting out some relatively large dimension and running a volume
surface between the Channel and Water surface. The 0 contour of that
volume surface will be the floodplain.

These are the two methods I will use at AU in my floodplain class in
case you want to see more.

I found a work around --

It seems I can open the output files in a $300 GIS program, Global Mapper. Yet Map3D can't open the data files.

I will likely export them to C3D.

However, what James and others suggest is the correct way to do it, since there isn't a true surface, per se, in Hec-RAS. Edited by: mikesdak on Oct 1, 2009 10:26 PM

True - HEC-RAS does not create a surface and it only calculates the
elevation at the cross-section and exports the station intersection of
the HWL in the output. (Open the output in Notepad - its plain text)
and is very easy to read.

I think the issue with the extension is that it will take more than 500 station-elevation points from Civil3D. HEC-RAS is limited to 500 of these points. This still goes and HEC-RAS ends up with messed up data. Somehow, the extension needs to weed out the points down to the 500 limit. Better than the user trying to do that. We get very good surface data now and the export files just end up with too many points. Can you verify that this is what causes issues?

Thanks

C3D dumps out all the section points. Perhaps if you take your surface
and weed it down somewhat you could avoid this problem. Would you please
drop me an e-mail off line? I'd like to follow up a bit more on this
issue. first.last@autodesk.com

I have exactly the same problem with the HEC-RAS extension. I requested help from AutoDesk Tech Support in February, but have not received a shred of help. The following message was received March 1, 2010:

"Thank you for sending along the data in question. Unfortunately all attempts made to import the data resulted in the same results you had reported. I have since logged this with Development for further review, and linked this case to it so you will be updated to the changes in status.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Thanks again, and have a great day!

I am amazed that there have been so few posts regarding this issue.
