I have a user that occasionally finds a hatch that he cannot report the area of. What may cause that?

If the hatch boundary crosses itself the resultant hatch will not display an area. Two vertices at the same location will be considered crossing. I have better luck with areas if I create the hatch by picking points instead of objects.
Does he have the current SP's? Is the drawing from an previous version?
I seem to remember a thread where this problem was tied to the version that was being run or the version the hatch was created in. I tried to search for it, but didn't find it.

I am listing sidewalk hatch with properties to do a quantity take off. 2014. Some hatches show and others do not.
Is this a function of the annotative/non annotative or assoc/non assoc. versions of the hatches or the odd geometry listed below.
I don't hatch so don't know how they were created. What would I look for in the property window?
