Feature Lines Slope or Gradient

I've had cause to do some site grading by creating featurelines from scratch. What is the difference between gradient and slope (they are the same are they not?) when creating them as I always seem to go wrong when using this method??

Grade(ient) is specified as a ratio. 1:2 or 1:12.

Slope is done using a percent. 2% or 45%

Pardon?  As far as I know Grade is always expressed as percentage, while Slope is expressed as a ratio.

Thanks Allen - I've just been trying to see what the difference is and was coming to that conclusion , presumably the gradient is in the Rise:Run format but a 1v:12h gradient would be entered as 12 and a 1:8 as 8 with percentage slopes entered as is but without the %sign?

You're absolutely right. I think I should go home soon!
