Excavation volumes

I need to calculate excavation volumes that have varying depths, a -1 foot excavation line, -2, -5, -10 up to -30 lines. What is the best way to do this? This site is NOT flat and very large. Probably hundreds of thounsands of cubic yards of dirt. What is the best way to do this? For one section I did this.

1-Copy existing grade
2-use the -1 excavation area as the boundary
3-moved it down one foot.
4-Merge with existing grade to created FG.

This results in a cliff type of formation, how do I smooth out this ridge? Create a feature line at the -1 excavation contour and grade to existing ground?

Any help with methods to calcuate this would be greatly appriecated!

For excavation of contaminated materials.

Steps 1-3 look good. 4: No need to paste into EG. Just use Surface-Utilities-Volumes and use EG as base surface and -1 surface as compare. Cut volume is your excavation volume.

Alternatively, create tin volume surface using same parameters as above. This gives you a permanent and dynamic record of the exc volume.
