Erratic mouse wheel zoom

Running Civil 3D 2013 64bit. Mouse is a Logitech M500 corded laser mouse.

The mouse wheel usually functions fine for zooming; however, every so often it will start zooming erratically, making it impossible to work without reverting to manual zoom commands. After a while it will then start functioning normally. I can't see any logic to it.

I've tried this with another mouse (Logitech, different model) and the same thing occurs.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I use a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse and have run into this situation. Try adjusting ZOOMFACTOR: default is 60, but around 30 works better for my Logitec Anywhere mouse (with my zoom speed settings, see attached). Also, if you have the Logitech control center, it will allow you to adjust your mouse settings specifically to the software, so you can have a custom scroll speed for only while using AutoCAD (also shown in the upper portino of the photo). Adjusting the scroll acceleratoin to 0 does weird things, so be sure it is somehwere above 0. Good luck!

I too have started having this problem! I was beginning to think I was the only one 😞

I guess I'll use this trick for now to until someone figures out what is causing it and fixes it!!!!

At some point in the past, for unrelated reasons, I switched to a Logitech M570 Trackball.  Since then, I haven't had problems with my wheel zoom.

I am using a Logitech M705. Not sure if that means anything....

I have a techie boyfriend that lives with me and we've tried all the he can think of. I am convinced that it's an AUTOCAD thing since it's not doing it in any other programs.

I also upgraded to 2017.  This particular problem occurred in an earlier version.

In the past, it was the Setpoint software provided by Logitech that was causing the problem, and I had to uninstall the Setpoint software.

I can understand your reasoning. But since the majority of AutoCAD users don't experience that. It must be more that just an AutoCAD thing,

Have you tried updating your graphics card drivers? Or turning off Hardware Acceleration? Since you're seeing the erratic zooms on the screen. It's just as likely it's a display problem as a mouse problem.

Erratic mouse Logitech M105.
As described by others here, I have been noticing the same problem, thus, It seems to be progressing to "jump" and became as erratic as I use it.

Most part of the problems like this I have in C3D I solve by minimizing the program and maximizing it again. Not it doesn't work.

the zooming just work properly when I'm looking trough a Paper's viewport, never at Model.

..Do someone know if the length of the Z Axis may be related to the scale of the zoom, as shown at the image below?

With all due respect sir, It seems pretty compelling evidence that the problem is with Autocad when the problem only occurs in Autocad. Just my humble opinion.

In addition this is not an uncommon problem. Google will turn up a lot of queries about the problem, this forum has a lot of discussion about it and almost every user I know experiences the problem at least occasionally.

And lastly many of the proposed solutions that are effective at all involve changing some setting or closing a dialog box (such as the ever destabilizing layer dialog) in Autocad. Mmmm.......

Me thinks the lady has a point.

I do agree with you that the video card/display list probably shares some of the blame. However, once again my video card works flawlessly with every other program. I rather think it has to do with Autodesk handling of the display list. A little of both. Minimizing then maximizing also points to the display list but then you would think that a regen or redraw would do even better. That is curious.

In any case setting out on a journey of trial and error regarding a video card that does not cause your mouse to go berserk would be impractical not to mention expensive. I am in the $600 range with my video card. I would be interested to hear anyone out there with a big honkin $2000 and up killer video card never has this problem. It would be an interesting bit of data to add to the discussion.

The mouse driver.......that is always the first suggestion but never heard a "that fixed it" response. No offense intended but it's kind of a Microsoft-like "it's the other guys driver" sort of response.

Hope I did not offend by being too negative. I did not intend to. Just putting in my take on a long standing and irritating problem. Squeaky wheel and all that.

I will try turning off Aero. That does sound promising.

PS - This is not a new problem. It's been happening pretty much every since we left the digitizer behind (slight exaggeration there).

It's 106 miles to Chicago
we got a full tank of gas
half a pack of cigarettes
it's dark
and we're wearing sunglasses.........Hit it!

I did say more than just an AutoCAD thing. From the post in this thread it looks like it's more common with Logitech hardware and certain drivers.

I can raise my hand. We've run Nvidia Quadro for yeas and I've never had the problem described. We just upgraded to Quadro P4000's. More for point cloud work than Civil 3D design.

I didn't read all the previous post word for word. Was the graphics card driver mentioned? Finding the right one can solve a lot of problems. Unfortunately it isn't always just loading the latest one. Last year I had to downgrade 3 or 4 versions to solve a display problem.

This response is way too funny, LOL.

However, I tried it and it worked - scary!  Clearly, as stated below - it's being triggered by touching another app more than once.

Thanks for the chuckle!  🙂

I can throw another wrench into the problem. I have the same zoom problems but I'm not using Acad ... It is happening to me on SolidWorks. Logitech M510 mouse here. Problem started when I was upgraded to a new computer, but I kept my same mouse.

So the common denominators as far as I can see are: logitech mice & drivers, and a CAD software.

Will try the suggested solutions and report back.

I'm using an M705 mouse with a MK700 keyboard, SetPoint (Control v6.67.83; Driver v5.90.41), and Inventor 2016 and have been having the same issue.

My way of resolving it is to go to the SetPoints menu, change the scroll Lines, apply, change back to 1 Line, apply, then it solves the issue.

It's super sporadic as to how often it happens....some days it's 2 minutes, others it's 2hrs. Super interesting that it's happening in Solidworks too....has to be a SetPoint/Logitech issue.

I have had same problems most of you have mentioned. I ended up retiring my logitec and switched to a basic microsoft 2 button with wheel. Did that couple years ago. No problems sinse.

Thanks for your responses.
I agree about it being super sporatic.

For now im not having that same issue, but various other glitch from time
to time

I am using logitech options rather than setpoint, but im guessing it down
to conflicts btw windows 10 updates and logitech versions.

One thing for sure, logitech support is somewhere btw horrendus and absurd.
Phone support a sick joke and online support nonexistant.

I really consider it an insult ...
-considering how much logitech equip i have purchased over the years

I had the same issue (Logtech M325 mouse), have Setpoint driver version 6.00.112 installed and found that when I unchecked the box to enable application-specific button settings in the Advanced Settings tab, the issue was resolved. Haven't seen the effect of doing this in any other apps yet, but it restored normal zoom wheel function in C3D 2022 at least.
