Erasing Point Names?

I've "accidentally" added a letter to the Point Name box and now I can't
erase it. When I try to delete it, an error message pops up that gives
a list of invalid characters (e.g. <>/\":;|,*?')

I know this really isn't that big of a deal (I could leave it), but why
would I be locked out of changing this back to a blank box?

I'd still like to know how to delete a point name and leave it blank. I still get the following message:

Error: string contents for attribute 'Name' contain invalid characters. The following characters are not valid in object names: <>\/":;=│,*?'
