I have dual 27" monitors and the system topology is attached but I can't get both to run at 2560x1440 pixels (both are at the recommended resolution from Windows).
Is this a problem that can be solved or I am just stuck with mismatched resolutions?

What do you mean, Neil..?
Anyway, try to set both monitors at 1600x900: if it works, increase gradually up to the maximum supported by your VGA.
Sytem topology is what the Nvidia control panel shows.....monitor 2 is at max resolution - I'm wondering if the way they are connected may be the issue - 1 via DisplayPort and the other via VGA (I've no idea what all this means by the way, I just know I have mismatched resolutions that is a bit of pain at the moment)

These apps typicaly have a setup wizard that allows you to choose different configurations. Did you look for an NVidia folder in the start menu? Perhaps something in the control panel or even in the menu system of the NVidia control panel?
Did you try disabling the nvidia desktop manager feature?
If you right click on the desktop do you have a menu option for NView Properties?

could be a limitation of the display port
that would be my guess

Yes - this is what I'm thinking.....I'll need to wait until the IT guy is back from holidays as he set it up while I was on holiday

Yes this is it - it could be the way they are all connected and the IT guy may have done a temporary fix unitl the correct cabling arrives (here's hoping; otherwise I have a very expensive paper weight on the left side of my desk.....)
