dual core system variable

Hey everyone...I just got a new computer and I cannot remember if there was a system variable in C3D that set different levels of dual core usage.

If anyone can think of it or just let me know I am dreaming please let me know. Thanks a bunch!

2008 btw.
Thanks
Kyle

It should be WhipThread with values from 0-3
Hope it helps

Kidding aside, check out the variable WHIPTHREAD. One of our IT people recommended disabling hyperthreading. He said it would improve performance. I tried this but have not noticed any improvements.

Whipthread may make regens a bit faster, but watch out for draw order
problems. They can easily offset the faster regen speed.

From what Autodesk says, the draw order might be affected visual, but it would not be affected on the plotter.

Which has it's own issues: what you see is not what you get.

thanks for the reply, I will test it and I think you might be right 🙂
Anyway, is good to be up to date about these small details that could make our life easier, or on the other hand harder 🙂

Hi Kyle-

I don't know of anything besides WHIPTHREAD, but there is another avenue
that's possible using Windows Task Manager. You can right click on a
process and set the Affinity of a program, i.e. tell it what core to use.
What I end up doing is pushing as much as I can to CPU0, leaving pretty much
all of CPU1 availablefor Civil 3D.

There is a program that will help set affinites much faster - search the Web
for SMP Seesaw. The caveat is that it will work only for dual (not quad)
core machines.

HTH,

Jeff

Hey everyone...

Thanks for all the replies.

Yeah WHIPTHREAD is what I was thinking of...so thanks for that. But, it doesn't really seem to change much for me even on large drawings so I am going to leave it on value '1' unless someone can convince me otherwise...? lol

As for setting the affinity also another good idea. I already have the affinity set 2 the second core for C3D and all other apps on the first core. Also, there is another option in the task manager I've been messing with and it seems to make a difference. Setting the priority higher than normal.

I dunno but let me know what you think!

Thanks again.
Kyle
