Drawings still looking for Deleted External Surface File .mms

Hi,
I had created a very large surface before realizing that my hardware couldnt handle it. So I deleted that surface as well as the extral .mms file.

Now everytime I open the drawing I get an error message saying it cannot find the External Surface file...

Any way for me to remove this link totally so it isnt looking for it anymore?

Thank You!

Joe

I haven't had to do this, so no idea if it will work, but it can't hurt.
Create a blank text file in the location it is looking for the mms file.
Rename that txt file to be the same name as the mms, open C3D & the drawing,
at this point it should realize it no longer needs the mms file so it will
release it's "hold" on it. Save & close, then delete the bogus mms file if
C3D didn't do it for you.

Again, this is just something I would try, but not sure if it will work.

Thanks for the reply. I tried this and you are correct, it finds the file, sees there is nothing in it and then deletes it, but then next time you re-open it continues to look for the missing .mms file...

You need to create a surface with the same name as the one the .mms file references. Then export the new surface to an xml file. Re-name the xml file to the name of the missing .mms file and move it to the file path Civil 3D is looking for it. The next time you go into your drawing it will find the .mms file and remove it as well as the reference to it in the drawing. All Fixed.

Joe,

I just ran into this error myself "External Surface File Not Found."

After scouring the web, I trial and errored it. I can up with removing a data shortcutted profile that must of had the old surface as the reference. After that was out of my shortcuts, I no longer had this issue.

Hope this helps other people.

Hi, rarodriguez

I´m glad to hear that!.

Remember the MMS file is created by Civil 3d automatically, to manage large surfaces.

I hate to bring up an old thread, but the last part of the Option 2 was what worked for me perfectly.

Option 1 was crashing every time.

Thank You!!!
