Displaying/Labeling Data in Plan/Profile/XSEC

Hi All,

I have a prospective client who deals with utilities (gas, water, electric, etc.) and wants to know if there is a way to display and label them in the plan, profile and xsec and have them update dynamically. I tried creating a pipe network (with styles, etc.) and “tricking” Civ3D to display a utility using a custom linetype, blocks, etc., but I only got as far as the plan view looking correctly. In the profile view I can get the pipe to display ok, but I can’t get the labels to link to the actual pipe or just the "crossing" inverts to display automatically.

Now, I'm not comparing products or saying one is better than the other, but in InRoads (another civil design software for those of you that don't know 🙂 to get something to display in the plan, profile or xsec view you simply add it to a surface and tell InRoads whether it is allowed to display in those different views and how it should display in each view.

I can only assume that this client isn’t the first one to ever want this functionality in Civil 3D. Does anyone know of a way to do what I ask above and have it be linked to the plan/profile/xsec views?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Seth,

I know that if you create a Pipe Style in Civil 3D you can determine what the Pipe looks like in Plan, Profile and Section view. Meaning that you can determine, the layer, color, linetype and hatching. Is this what you are looking to accomplish?

Thanks,

this post might help. there are tools now in 2007 that take it to the next
level (like references, etc) but this will get you started:

Dana,

Fantastic post (on your blog)! That is exactly what I was trying to do. I was actually almost there, I was turning on/off the display of the incorrect Pipe components in the Pipe style :-).

Thanks again Dana (and Melanie).

One more question on this subject, which Label Property is the crossing centerline station/elevation? The Text Component Editor displays many Start and End Station/Elevation labels, but there isn't one for "as it crosses the centerline" label. This is the real label I need. I can do it with a regular profile label, but that doesn't link it to the utility.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately, that's where it stops short of the complete "dynamic"
labeling. You have to add the STA and Elevation as a Profile label. Its
not totally automated, but what's nice is that if that crossing pipe does
move, you can just move the label and the data updates.

is there reference text in the pipe label that will reference an alignment
of choice?

Let me check

you actually add it as a Profile VIEW label. As opposed to a profile label.

It may seem nit-picky for me to point it out to an otherwise pefect human
being (anthony), but it really makes a difference when first learning to get
your vocabulary straight.

When Civil 3D asks you to pick/label/edit a profile, it wants you to pick a
"line" that represents the vertical aspects of an alignment.

When Civil 3D asks you to pick/label/edit a profile view, it wants you to
pick the "grid/view".

There are no "after the fact" additional profile lables, all profile labels
are built into the label set.

However, you can label station, offset, depth and much more with profile
view labels.

Keep in mind that in order for a profile view label to give you elevations
in relation to the pipe that are dead on with the PIPE's centerline, you
must have made an alignment that follows the centerline, and profiled it as
well. (unless of course you pipe follows the road CL exactly)
