Display parcels differently in different drawings?

How are people dealing with displaying parcels differently in different drawings? For example, we may plat a subdivision, but then we need to do an ALTA survey of one of the lots in the subdivision. How do we get the lot boundary to look like a lot for the plat, but like a main outer boundary for the ALTA?

As far as I can tell, parcels cannot be used as data shortcuts or project objects, so there's no way to create references to them, as with surfaces or alignments. And XREFs are problematic, because of the inability to control the style of the object, and the inability to use C3D labels on XREFed items.

There's the option of exporting the parcels as LandXML and importing them into each drawing. But this means that parcel information is now duplicated in multiple drawings throughout the project, which is bad.

So is there some trick that I have not been able to discover? Or is this really the mess it appears to be?

how about layer control in the downstream XREF drawing? Just changing the layer's linetype and color, etc to look like a boundary line in the ALTA drawing?

as far as labels go- there are a few schools of thought, but i like this personally.

Well, since I'm using Parcel Style to control which layer my parcel linework goes on, that sounds like it would be incredibly ugly.... Every parcel that I wanted to use downstream would have to have a dedicated parcel style. I'm not sure what would happen in practice, but that sounds like it's just about as bad as using XML exports and having parcel definitions in multiple drawings.

And I guess, from your suggestion and from the link you provided, that the answer to my question is that "Yes, this IS a terrible mess"...

We've been using multiple styles for multiple-sized text as in the link you provided, but that's a terrible mess, too. Label styles are bad enough, and that option contributes to the "style-breeding problem", but it does seem to be the least-evil option.

Parcels in C3D need tons of work - probably a complete redesign. In addition to making parcels "Project Objects" that can be used in PM and with Data Shortcuts, we also seriously need a way to group parcels, so we can handle replatted areas in a coherent fashion. So far, we've been managing to get stuff out the door, but boy is the process ugly... 😞

We have multiple pen settings for plotting.

1) survey.ctb
2) a) design.ctb
b) utility.ctb
c) erosion.ctb

I just wish one could bulk change the segment label styles at least.

Off this topic, but what would be pretty slick too if the description key editor worked properly.

It's supposed to be fixed - I'll try to test later today to confirm.
