is there a way to have the current layer displayed in the quick access toolbar? civil 3d 2010

On the Home tab, right-click on your layer pulldown list and choose Add to Quick Access Toolbar.

that's great, thanks!  is there a way to widen it to see a longer layer name?

Absolutely. Edit your CUI file after you add the layer box to the quick access toolbar.
