Disappearing text

Pieces of text are disappearing after I move them. I try to undo and they are still gone. The only thing that will bring them back is to save the drawing, close Civil 3D all together and re-open. If I only close the drawing and open it again, the text will disappear after I try to move it again. It has only happened a few time today on random pieces of text so I have not found a way to duplicated this problem.

We have Civil 3D 2012 installed on three different computers. One vista 32-bit, one vista 64-bit and one win 7 64-bit. A couple of video cards have certified drivers, one does not. It has happened at least once on all three computers today. None of our text styles are set to be annotative. Anyone?

Thanks,

Andy

Don't want to be a bad mesanger. But I think you may be having a corrupted drawing. Just to try it see if you can WBLOCK everything and insert it into a new drawing. That will tell you if the issue is with drawing. Good luck!

This has happened to me in about 3 or 4 drawings today and at least 5 other drawings that my co-workers were using. I wouldn't think it would be a drawing issue since I can re-open the drawing, move the same piece of text that I had issues with before and have no problems.

I will try to WBLOCK everything out into a new drawing but it will be hard to tell if it works since it is so sporadic.

Thanks,

Andy

Ok, so it is not a corrupted drawing problem and I can duplicate it. If I double click on a piece of text to edit it then try to move the text immediately after it will disappear. A regen will bring it back to the original location but I am not able to move or edit the text, even by using ddedit, until I close and re-open the drawing.

I can create a new drawing with the acad.dwt, create a brand new piece of text and it will do the same thing. The problem seems to have something to do with pickfirst. If I type ddedit then select some text it will be ok. If I have text selected then type ddedit followed by a move it will disappear.

Also, if I double click edit text "A" then go on to create another entity or edit a different object then go back to move or edit text "A", no problem.

Like I mentioned before, three different computers, three different operating systems, three different video cards, all the same issue. We have two other computers running Vista 32-bit and for some reason they have no problem repeating the steps above.

Try turning on you wipeouts to see if the text is masked.  Sometimes the mask gets in front of the text and wipes it out.

Type "wipeout" in the command line, then "F" for frames then "on".  This will show the wipeout frame.  You can delete them from here, move the text then go thru express tools to turn the mask back on if you need to.

Thanks for the reply. It's not a wipeout issue. It doesn't matter where I move the text, it disappears. Also, after the regen the text is still in it's original location before I did the move command. I am actually still able to list the text by selecting previous and the location is still the same as it was before the move.

We have been talking about this for a month.

Do a regen and the text should appear.

Options:

1.  Change txt to Mtext.

2.  Run Audit and answer Y.

I'm sorry, we only installed 2012 last week so this is the first I've seen or heard of this problem. Do you have any more info as to whether or not Autodesk is looking into this? I can only assume your two options are temporary solutions until this gets fixed.

My apologies to you.  I know that I referenced you in my response but my response was meant for Almas and others. From the responses so far, I don't know if anyone is working on this or not.

Ok, last time I will bring this up. The problem seems to be with the in-place text editor only. If you set "dtexted" to 1, the text editor will open a separate window and the text will not disappear after you move it. Although I prefer the in-place editor, this will work for me until Autodesk gets this fixed so I will mark this as the solution.

Can you share what font you are using and what method your are using to move the text? Grips, move or stretch, or the move command. I would also like to know if this is Mtext or straight text and if it is annotative or not. Do you also have your 3D graphic accelerator turn on or is it off? What graphic's card are you running and how much memory does it have? Sorry for all of the questions, I am just hoping to repeat your problem on my system is all, so far no luck. I have tried to repeat your issue with Standard text in a new drawing file, the text is .1 in height, it is not Annotative, there is nothing else in the file. I am on a small laptop with 8 gig ram and 2 gig video card, but my client has this same issue and he has 24 gig ram and 6 gig graphic card.... So please any additional information would be helpful. Thank you

This problem happens with true type and shx fonts. I am using the move command. Using the grips does not seem to cause this problem. This is not mtext, just regular text and it is not annotative. I am using an ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 card and I don't know how much memory it has but it's nowhere near yours. This problem happens with the hardware acceleration turned on or off.

I know I've said this before but I feel it's worth mentioning again. Out of all of our computers in the office, four are exactly the same in terms of hardware and OS. They are all running the exact same version of the graphics card driver as well. Only one of these computers is experiencing this problem. I tried to get this problem to occur on another computer but everything works just fine.

Another contributor has the same problem and according to the following link, someone from Autodesk is looking into it.

Thanks for all the posts. I have the exact same issues: intermittantly, I will move a text only to have it disappear. The only way to see it again is to REGEN and it appears at the original location.

To edit it, save and re-open, and everything's fine. Or as Bill suggests, I have also used AUDIT Y. Audit reports 0 errors but then the text works fine.

I am not holding my breath for a fix. I reported a major error with polylines in April 2000 that has never been fixed.

Knigge,

I have encountered the same problem, with objects other than text.

Please see my post:

And see if it relates to you also.

As long as we keep beating on this horse I am just wondering if there are valid reasons that using regular text is necessary.  For sure it is not an easy task but changing text to mtext seems to solve the problem.

I am not arguing, just wondering, I  don't know of any reasons that I need regular text.  Joe probably knows, but he is too shy to respond.

I was having the same issue, the text would disappear when editing. If you highlight it, right click, then select "editor settings", then select "always display as WYSIWYG" this should take care of it. It worked for me.

Sorry, should have mentioned in previous post that text mask needs to be turned off also.

Hi all,

I am trying to help track down what may be causing this and have some question for you--any information you can supply us will help.

I do have a few questions about your system and drawings where you are seeing the drawings disappear for everyone having these issues:

1.  Are the drawings that are having the problems drawings that were originally created in Civil 3D or were the created in both Civil 3 and AutoCAD?

2.  Have you checked that your graphics card and the driver for it are certified and correct and that when you do this--do you still see this problem?

3.  If you do--can you tell us the computer setup, graphics card and driver combination and send us a drawing with reproducible steps that we can see this happen  (if the drawing and reproducible steps are not possible--how about just the hardware information so we can see if we can start seeing a pattern?)

Thanks Everyone--I am also going to post this on the Civil thread as well!

The problem is with the in place text editor for single line text in 2012. Change the system variable DTEXTED to 1 and the issue goes away, but you are then using the old text editor wth a dialog box. I kind of like it better anyway.
