Designing roundabout

Hi everyone!

Has anyone read Jack Strongitham's tutorial how to design a round-about? Not complaining. I think it's great. Just read it through and i have some questions.

The best way to design a roundabout/intersection/cul-de-sac? What's your expeience?

Why should I create a roundabout i 3d when the machines and surveyors still don't use my surface to build it from?

GIVE REPLIES!!!!!!!!!! 😉

Why should you design it in 3D? I have a few reasons. Some may be
important to you, some may not.
Volumes
Verification of drainage (water drop tool)
Proposed contours
Cross sections
Spot elevations
Even if the contractor doesn't use your surface, they could maybe use points
generated from the surface.

Exactly. You'll have to convey the information to build it somehow. Whether
it's profiles and alignments or spot elevations or whatever. I would think
you'll want that information to be tied to and derived from a model.

Hi Matt!

Well i think i get the point.
But i have problem with cross sections in intersections.
Wrote about it in a post earlier. The cross section for intersectiondidn't showed up when i created cross section for it.

It seems that the i only could make cross sections for the alignment that represented the road. But when i create intersections i don't use the centerline. instead i juse alignment that represent curb och asphalt.

But it works for volumes, drainage, points and so on.

Thanks for replying!!!

Hi Patrick,

Despite all the effort you can put into creating them, I've never seen a
contractor take any notice of a section through an intersection. They
really are irrelevant to construction documentation.

With modern construction equipment, the 3D model is what you will need
to pass to the contractor.

You're right, cross sections from different corridor baselines don't appear,
but their surfaces do. This is what I use iinstead of the corridor in
sections.

Laurie is correct too. I have never shown sections through intersections.
I haven't ever done a roundabout though. Are sections sometimes required
for them?

Hi Matt,

It is common to create one artistic section through the centre of the
roundabout for publicity. The plants always look very healthy and are
never hidden by the signs which only show up in photographs.

Hi all!

Thanks for your replies!!! I'm realy grateful for all your response when problems and questions come up!! Hope i maybe can help you to some day 😉

THANKS!!!!

Do you have any favoritetips how to create roundabouts and intersections.......only with civil3d, no third part apps, or do you use same methods like Jack Strongitharm does? (See earlier post)

Hi Patrick,

If you're using Civil 3D 2009, check out the Advanced Corridor Design tutorials in the Help. There are tutorials on creating both intersections and roundabouts.

Hope this helps,

Tim

Hi Tim.

Still waiting for our IT-crew to install it. It were forgotten by one guy, so i'll hope i can check it out in just a few weeks ;(

Hi Patrick,

I can't comply with your request on "favourite methods and without third
party". I use ARD which enables completion of the design in not much
longer than it takes to write this message.

Why not have a look at www.civil3dtools.com for Corridor-EZY Lite which
provides this functionality at the retail price of $0.00?

Hi!

Have been drawling over it since i saw a webcast where they made intersections.....all of it in no time at all.

I asked this question before. Does Corridor_EZY Lite work for the swedish/europeen market =>Meter instead och inch/feet?
If it does....then i got to try it out.

Hi Patrick,

I answered before on another post.
I represent CadApps Australia in Europe.
The name of Corridor-Ezy here is Advanced Road Design (ARD) and is already succesfull in couple of countries in Eastern Europe

Please feel free to send me an email for more information so I can organize for you a web presentation too.

Thank you

I saw a webcast of, think it was, Corridor EZY and it looked real nize.
Do you know if there are any swedish users?

Hi Patrick,

I have designed a couple of roundabouts in Romania using just ARD (Advanced Road Design)
Has specific and dynamic features to automatically match at intersections the intersected roads and to vertically design the kerb returns and the inner and outer circles of the roundabout.
Is so neat and fast.
With automated plan and profiles drawings

Should you require more information do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

The link you had posted for the roundabout tutorial was old. Do you have another place to look?

Thanks.
