Description Key Example

I am engineer trying to help our survey department get set up on Civil 3D/Map 3D. There are no standards for the department, which is a huge headache.

I wanted to start by getting a standard for their description keys. Right now they about 200 different descriptions that are: extremely disorganized, ambiguous, and duplicated (several descriptions for the same object). Is there a good place to get a standard list of description keys? Does anyone have a list of description keys they wouldn't mind sharing?

Also, does anyone one know of a good resource to start implementing 3D for survey. I know I'll need to create a bunch of point styles and tie them to description keys, but is there a good walkthrough for this and other necessary steps.

Thanks for the help.

Hi sakka252,

Due to an errant motherboard, I don't have access
to any data sets at the moment.

A good place to start is with the survey standards of an
organisation like a "State Road Authority" in the area where you
work.

Alternatively, make a list of all the values you
now use and annotate it with suggestions for consistency, then ask your
colleagues for comments.

Regards,

Laurie Comerford.

You can download a sample drawing template which
has description keys and associated point styles from the StringerSurvey Web
Site:

Do your surveyors at least have a standard codelist for their data collectors?

Hi,

If you send me an email at john.marsau.pls@gmail.com I can send you back a little utility that will make managing and setting up your Descriptor Keys much simpler. It will let you create the keys from a CSV file.

Once you have that we can talk about other problems you might be having.

Take care,
John
