DEM File Import

I'm trying to import DEM file data into a drawing with other geospatiailly referenced data, but I can't figure out how to go about importing the DEM. I've also tried downloading the Grid Ascii file format DEM file as well.

I've tried creating a surface from a DEM file, as well as using the "data connect" feature in mapper. Either way, I can't seem to get Civil 3D to recognize either of the file formats.

I can't find anything useful in the help system that explains to me what a DEM file should look like, or how to convert a standard NED DEM file format to a file type that Civil 3D supports.

Can anyone get me pointed in the right direction?

Thanks.

Did you downloads an STDS then convert to DEM? This tends to be what I
see. My suggestion is to create a TIN, then add the DEM file as part of
that TIN. If you do this, C3D will perform a transformation that it
won't do if you just build direct from TIN. Don't ask me why.

If you happen to own a copy of Mastering, we look at this exact
procedure on Page 123. Hope this helps.
