Morning everyone...
So I have this little issue that's bothered me now for a couple of weeks or so. I have a design drawing with several alignments and profiles, and have created a corridor with a surface and all, and now have to create some plan-profiles. So I created the view-frames, then the sheets and all looks good. Now back in my design I create some new profiles by layout in existing profile views and want those new profiles to show up in the plan-profiles I created. I save the drawing then goto my project in toolspace and right-click then select "Create Data Shortcuts" and it tells me that the drawing must be saved. So I save it then repeat, and get the same thing. So I save the drawing then close cad. It ask me to save even though I don't do anything (i.e. run a command or zoom or pan). I save, get out, then restart. Open the drawing and the first thing I do is try to create the data shortcuts and it tells me to save the drawing first. I save then retry and it says the same thing. ISAVEPERCENT is set to 0 for a full save. I do have some apps loaded and running, but that will only affect when I first start the drawing and not later after doing work then saving. I also have the latest service patch installed. Any ideas?

Do you know if the "Save" command has been redefined? We had that problem because we were doing some layer manipulating during the save command.
We had to issue ".save" instead when working with data shortcuts. See if that works.
Does not appear to have been re-written. Whether I hit the save button, run the save command, or save-as, or qsave it save the drawing. I've also gotten out of the drawing and saved it as I get out, then re-open the drawing without getting out of C3D and it still does it. Not sure if it's a bug or what. Eventually after saving and getting out 3 or 4 times it finally let me save the data shortcuts. But I still don't know why it went thru all of this.
Have you tried what Bruce suggested? Be sure to include the leading period.
**Edit** I think you may want to use ".qsave".
Just tried it and it still asked me to save the drawing after the fact. And this is also on a different drawing (project) as well. Also did a qsave and it still asked me to save the drawing.
I'm curious - are the files stored on a network or locally? If they're networked, put them on the local drive and see if you still have the same problem. It sounds like a system problem with file permissions - are you running the program as an admin?
The project is on the network, and all of our projects are networked. They have been networked for awhile now and I've not had this problem before. As far as admin rights, I'm pretty sure I have them. When I get the chance I will try and copy over the project to my local drive and see if that fixes the problem.
Tell me about the network - plain Windows Server storage location?
Running Win Server 2008- 64 bit with a domain controller at each of our offices.
Nothing unusual there. Since this isn't something that happens all the time with other data, could you log a case with us and upload the data? I'll be more than happy to take a look at it and see if I can tell what's going on.
If I get a chance I'll try and do that. Funny thing is I just created several more alignments for centerlines and EOPs and it did the same thing. So I shut the drawing down and went to another cad tech and got her to open the drawing. She was not working on the project at all and was able to switch projects, save the drawing, and then add the data shortcuts of the new alignments that I had created earlier with no problems. So this tells me that it might be my install, or maybe something with my profile. Thoughts along this line?
i have same problem that I am not able to create data shortcut after saving my file as well as i am not able to import styles from other drawing. so i repaired my civil 3D. and it work but after make any changes and save my file again same problem occurs i got the message save before drawing to create data shortcut and again i need to repair civil 3D. and i also update with service pack-1..so please tell me what to do? it is time consuming each time to repair and open the drawing and create data shortcut and again make some change and close with save and again repair and again open the drawing and create data short cut..so please how can i come out from this cycle? and i also create case in subscription login..and i got response that check in tutorial files or other files so in that files its solve but while i started another project and data shortcut works for few days but after same problem generated...so i don''t know why this is happen in 2011 version i doesn't get this problem but in 2012 i got this problem...
I'm having the same problem as well! I just upgraded my drawing to 2012 . And when I want to create data shortcut, I have the same message "please save drawing before creating data shortcut" and there's no other way around it in creating one...=(
Mine is set to Autocad 2010 Drawing.
So has anyone come up with a solution to this "data shortcuts" problem yet? I continue to have this problem, even after doing a repair on my C3D. And I am having this problem on multiple projects. One's that I created as well as other projects that other designers created an have worked on for months now.

Did you ever open a case with Autodesk?
It appears .qsave worked for others who posted here. Are you sure you typed in the leading period?
