Creating contour label styles

I have two questions about creating contour label styles in Civil 3D 2008.
1. How do I control the layer on which the contour label is placed. I found the Layer property on the General tab in the Label Style Composer but that does not appear to be working.
2. How do I control which layer the contour label line is placed?

Josh,

As you see, we changed a couple of things with the contour labels in 2008.

1. The layer for the contour labels is controlled under "Drawing
Settings" -> "Object Layers" -> the "Tin Surface - Labeling" object.
2. For the label line, those shouldn't print show it doesn't matter what
layer they are on. Better still, there is a new option to only show them
when you are editing the labels so you don't have to worry about them. You
can control the visibility of each one, but I would go into the Command
settings for surfaces, and under "AddContourLabeling" turn "Display Contour
Label Line" to false. (to answer the question, the line goes on the same
layer as the label)

I see that Peter F. has already answered this, but I am sending this anyway.



1. If you have a Contour Label showing, click on it and look in your
PROPERTIES toolbar you should see the labels info. Proposed Major Label or
Proposed Minor Labels. From this toolbar you can select to display or not
display.

2. This is tricky for users going from 07 to 08. Do not be concerned what
layer the line is on.
Select -> Toolspace -> Settings -> Surface -> Edit Feature Settings ->
Contour Label Line (true of false, OFF or ON).

Select FALSE.
Now when you select the label itself the contour line will appear. It works
real well.

Has anyone figured out how to set a default layer for the contour label lines? It's ridiculous to have to assign them to a layer after they are created in 2008. In response to the above replies, it does matter what layer the label lines are on, because if the layer is frozen the labels don't show up...

Any insight would be appreciated.

Go to your settings tab, surface>contour>label styles and right click on
label styles and you can edit the label style defaults

That's not right.

Like Peter said, use the Object Layer settings in the Drawing Settings. On the Object Layer tab, find the entry for "Tin Surface - Labeling".

If you specify a suffix or prefix that contains an asterisk (*), then the surface name will be used in the layer name. (Note that if you do this, though, the layer name will not automatically change if you change the surface name.)
