Crash after changing surface style

I have a 3000 acre surface I am trying to create utilizing aerial DTM mapping data at a 2' contour interval. The program kept crashing after I added the breakline data. I utilized the work around of setting the surface style to no display and the data was added to the surface without a problem. However, when I change the surface style to anything else the contours generate fine on the screen but when I try to save the file the program crahses. I have purged and audited and detached all xrefs. I really do not want to divide the site up into multiple surfaces at this point. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Version of Civil3D is crucial to the answers, here, so please give that. If
'07, SP3? If '07, pre SP3, do that before anything else.

The description you've given for what you've done is a bit ambiguous. Did
you use ONLY the DTM breakline info for the surface, or did you add the
contours, as well? If you added contours, I'd start with the questions of
"why?" and "did you try without adding the contours?".

What contour interval are you trying to display? Have you tried something
like 100/500, just to see the result?

3000 acres is pushing it, in my opinion, based on my (limited) experience
with 1000 acre plus sites.

.........my intial thoughts/comments, anwyay........for what they're worth,
of course
