Convert Civil 3d Surfaces to Autocad 3d solids

is there a way to convert terrain surfaces in civil 3d to autocad 3d solids?

Make the surface show elevation banding or slopes (making sure that the
style displays solid) and then use the extract surface objects tool.

surface - utilities - extract object from surface

but it gives me planar triangles

Hi Sweapon2,

Can an AutoCAD solid contain 1,000,000+ surface elements?

A better question to ask is what are you trying to do and how would you
do it without a solid model.

Laurie Comerford

I get solids. Make sure the surface has a style set that is showing solids.
Mine is set to show elevations.
See image.

Laurie has a point. If your surface is too big this may not work as
expected.

If you were to consider third party software, the MapWorks Export Solid
tool will add a flat base & skirt to Civil3D surfaces creating a 3dSolid
Object (in 2010 or higher) or export to an STL format for applications
like Flow3D.

F2S.lsp generates ACIS solid from 3dfaces
Posted: Aug 23, 2006 9:39 PM
Hi, troops -

Here is F2S.lsp (Face-to-Solid), a companion to M2S.lsp (Mesh-to-Solid).

As in M2S.lsp, the solid is created by projecting each selected face
vertically "down"
the CURRENT z-axis to a plane a user-specified
distance below the lowest vertex.

Should work with all version of AutoCAD that support ACIS solids -
actually tested only with 2006 and 2007. Extrudes about 300 faces per
minute with 2006 on a dual-Athlon system, about 1000 faces per minute
with 2007.

Comments and suggestions most welcome.

Just thought I would add a link to the 7 step solution that autodesk published. No need for the lisp, but not necessarily a better way to do it.

Just incase the instructions disapear in the future.

Convert a Civil 3D Tin Surface to AutoCAD Solid

Apr 20, 2010

Issue:

In some instances, usually for interoperability reasons with other software, you may want to convert your Civil 3D surfaces to AutoCAD solids.
There is no direct way to do this but the method described below will help you do it efficiently.

Solution:
  1. Have your Surface style display Triangles
  2. Use the _AeccSurfaceExtractObjects command in order to extract the Triangles and obtain 3D FACEs
  3. Set your view to Isometric and draw a vertical line (the length of the extrusion you would like to obtain from one triangle vertex)
  4. Use the EXTRUDE command with the Direction option. Select the 3D faces, then select the start and end point of your line for the direction (All 3D faces will get extruded vertically)
  5. UNION all those new 3D Solids...
  6. In case you get a message "the maximum number of history mode would be exceeded...  then run the BREP command and select all the solids to remove their history.
  7. Run again the UNION command to union all those solids.

Now you should have one big solid.
The bottom of the ground is not flat but reflect the top surface
SUBSTRACT a big box if you need to make the bottom flat...
