Comma in Civil 3D 2007?

Does anyone know how to add a comma to the square footage entry on a parcel
label style?

Oh, wait, I DO! (All thanks go to Peter Funk who gave me the procedure over
the phone and allowed me the privledge of documenting it)

Procedure and captures at:

Dork.

But that's a seriously nice workaround.

I know, we hate that word, but that's a good one.

Now, Dan, et al, put it in as an option!

I have all kinds of other expression ideas. I am kind of an excel dork, so
this reminds me of all the crazy stuff i get excel to do. The flood gates
are open and my brains are about to spill out all over the floor. No, wait,
that is my cuppa joe right here.

Slight revision to the method... (the current method falls down if the area
is 10,000.00 for example).

Whole Number Expression = Parcel Area / 1000

Label: Whole Number

OK- new and improved.

Almost too easy. I was sorry not to use the FLOOR anymore, but I am sure I
can come up with something else to use it in.

Works great, unless you have 1,000,000 square feet (which is only 23
acres)...

and in that case, you need to make another label and expression for over
1000000 (1,000,000) sqft.

Expression Millions: Floor({ParcelArea} / 1000000) this would return "1" for
a million.

Label:
Copy the new label, and add this expression label in front, with no decimal
places, and a comma in between.

However, this only works up to 1,000,000,000 sqft, so for those billion sqft
parcels, you'd need another label.

I haven't explored this stuff yet (heaven knows I'm swamped with what I have
now). Does the expression builder have 'if-then-else' statements as in
Excel? If so, it would be easy to examine the number and determine if it is
over xxx digits and then would apply rule one, else rule 2. I don't know,
maybe this is way beyond the scope of the expression builder.

You can do the if then else, but you can't return a string, so it doesn't
help.

How does setting up expressions in label styles affect the redraw speed? In other words, is the result of the expression saved and used for subsequent redraws, or is the expression in the label style evaluated every time I zoom in or out with the mouse wheel?

I have worked out a different way of doing this, you get the same result but you could scale it to work for over 1 million SF lots. It uses 2 expressions and then you combine them in the style editor and put a comma between them.

Use Expressions like this

Thousands Only
TRUNC({Parcel Area}/1000)

Hundreds only
{Parcel Area} - (TRUNC({Parcel Area}/1000)*1000)

Then combine them in the contents editors by using thousands only with precision set to 1 then a comma then hundreds set using what ever precision you like.

Again for less than 1000 SF lots you get an extra comma and would need a different style and over 1 million you won't get the first comma but you could set up another for higher numbers.

Just a little different but this way you can display numbers to the right of the decimal place if you like.
