color and linetype display

We have recently had a couple of topographical drawings where all of our layer colors and linetypes change to white and continuous.  If we use grips to drag a line, the color and linetype show while being moved.  They all display properly when xref'd into another drawing.  Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

Audit the Drawing. If that doesn't help try recover. If that doesn't work wblock out everything in the drawing and insert the resultant drawing in a new drawing from your template. I haven't seen this in years and that's about all I can remember.

Is "Display plot styles" turned on in the page set-up?

is this in model space or a viewport (possible viewport overrides)?
