Civil3d 2012 why would i want ARD?

Hey,

Does anyone still use ARD, i mean back in the day when civil was starting out it did a pretty average job but using the Civil3d 2012 version i can't seee that ARD does anyting that civil3d doesnt do now am i mistaken ? 

Is there some real key features that it lets you do that plain civil cant ? or some proccess that it makes much easier? would you only use it if your spezalized in roads and transport?

You mean ARD=Advanced Road Design?

I have to say Civil 3D from 2011 on does a pretty good job with corridors. The features that Civil 3D lack but ARD provide is sewer house connection (my biggest wish for C3D2014) and stormwater design the Australian way.

Hmm, previous post came out wrong. Not suggesting we do design differently but that SSA/hydroflow default settings doesn't suit us.

I think the original poster meant Autodesk Raster Design.  Yes, there's a reason to have it, rubbersheeting.

We still use Raster Design as well.

This and a scanner replaces the old digitizing tables and we still need to digitize paper plans. We get to match & rubbersheet as Lisa said and more like OCR, semi auto onscreen digitizing, the ability to convert, edit and save the scanned images...

Why don't you use Map for rubber sheeting?

A few things that I'd use Raster Design for, beyond rubbersheeting:

1) you can isolate colors out of the input image - kinda like being able to have a USGS Topo map and extract out only the pixels for the contour lines (but using a DEM is much better than digitizing the quad...)

2) writing out image's world files & combining imagery 

3) if you isolate a color layer (eg contours above), then you can convert to "bitonal" or black & white and use the automatic tracing function for RD to convert raster to vector of .pdfs, scanned images, etc.

So, it has a use, but I've only really used it when working for a reseller... I'm too cheep to spend the $'s on in in, but would proably use if I' were doing more sitework / commercial multiparcel development again.

I think ARD is referrring to Advanced Road Design by CadApps in Australia.

It's a good case for being judicious when using acronyms.

As far as I know Storm and Sanitary Analysis can be set up to carry out storm analysis to satisfy australian methods.

If I had a project I believe that I would be using Advanced Road Design.  It is difficult to explain but the speed of processing is one thing.  It uses external files and does not BOG down the drawing file.
