Civil3D 2007 & ProjectWise

Due to a 4.5:1 Bentley:Autodesk user base, my management has initiated a ProjectWise implementation.

What approach would you take to enable Object linkage between Civil3D DWG files? My thought is to use Data Shortcuts, but do those really work anymore?

Is your ProjectWise integrated with SQL Server?

Please keep us posted if you resolve this issue.
We too are attempting to roll out a company-wide implementation of Projectwise with a mixture of AutoCAD and vertical products 2007 versions.
We will be testing a beta version of XM shortly in consultation with Bentley.
I don't yet understand Data Shortcuts, but through this forum, perhaps I might!
I have been wondering how we would manage the use of vault inside C3d in conjunction with Projectwise for secure drawing management....then I keep falling asleep...

Good Luck.

Peter.

Scott,

Our ProjectWise database will reside on a SQL server. Is there a way to fake to SQL databases to interact with each other?

I'm just wondering outloud:

If you already own SQL Server, and you're on subscription, than it seems
you're in an ideal candidate for the Vault (because you'll be able to run
the Vault for AutoCAD as well - sure, the workflow if 'different,' but very
simple). I know you don't WANT to use the Vault, but it just seems to fit.
You'll probably struggle to get the databases to interact with each other,
but then again, maybe separating the Microstation vs. the AutoCAD data isn't
a bad thing. I'm just thinking if you already own SQL...

Data Shortcuts are still around, but not as strong. Given the limited
amount of work you do, or need to do with C3D, you may be fine using LandXML
(if you need to) to share data, but again - just seem to be the perfect
candidate for Vault...

Keep in mind though that not EVERYBODY on subscription can download vault. If you're only on Civil 3D subscription, it isn't there...

I would just throw out a word of caution here with regard to Project Wise.
I have several friends that work for companies who have Bentley products,
including Project Wise and all of them that have purchased Project Wise have
yet to get it to work with Microstation files and the Engineering Data files
(InRoads/Geopak/MX), nevermind AutoCAD Drawings.

I'm not making a recommendation here, just throwing out some anecdotal
advise. Project Wise cost money, and Vault comes with Civil 3D, and is
integrated with Civil 3D as its data management tool. Yes we can argue the
virtues of that tool, but the fact is that they do work together, and are
designed to work together - can't say the same for Project Wise and AutoCAD
drawings.

Yes, there are challenges to this concept it is true, however, we are bound by a company global decision to accept Projectwise as the global EDMS...it just happens that in our NZ operation, we are AutoCAD based. We are almost "there', but as always, the proof of the pudding is in the eating....

cheers for that.

Peter.
