Civil 3D Spot Elevations Xref as "???"

I am working in Civil 3D 2015. I have a file that contains all of my finished grade spot elevations and slopes for a surface. When I Xref this file into my plans, the finished grade call outs only show up as "???". The only way they show up correctly is if open my original file, save, and refresh the xref.  When I publish my plans, I get nothing but ??? instead of the correct elevations. Any direction or help would be greatly appreciated.

Are the labels in the same file as the surface?  Or is the surface a dynamic reference?  It SHOULDN'T matter but sometimes things like this do.

I'm not sure what's happening since I'm not on 2015 yet. But as a workaround does DRefing the surface the labels are referring to get them to show correctly?

The surface is referenced in, the spot elevations do not live in the same dwg as the surface.

I dropped all of my callouts back into my original surface dwg and this worked. For some reason CAD doesnt load the reference correctly for these callouts.

Thank you!

As long as the surface is referenced via shortcut as opposed to just attaching the surface dwg file as an XREF, that should have worked.  If that doesn't then I'd consider that a bug.  If that's the case, please take a moment to report it.

I can't tell you how often (if at all) it's been reported to them. But if nobody reports it (such as assuming that someone else already has), then they'll never know about it -- and the more people who DO report it, the more chance it'll get fixed/added.

Bug reports/feature requests can be sent at the following address.

And if you're on subscription, I'd also open a support ticket reporting the bug/feature request that way too.
