Civil 3D Label Styles Annotation Scale versus Vieport Scale

am in the process of setting up a standard file for all designers to use our local office. This file will have most of the styles created for profiles, alignments, surfaces, profile views, etc... as mostly specified by the customer and industry standards.

I am having trouble maintaining the correct annotation scale in the viewport in paperspace and when plotting.

The attached word document has 3 figures. Fig 1 shows the correct viewport scale and correct annotation scale. Fig 2 shows how the annotation scale abruptly changes during the plotting process. This abrupt annotation scale change sometimes happens during the regen process or when I switch from layout to model space and back to layout. The annotation scale goes from 1:1 to 1:40 just as in the viewport. This change in annotation scale is not supposed to happen because I want to preserve a certain plotting height for my text versus a viewport scale by using various annotation scales.

I have researched the procedures for annotation scale and have not found any info related to this "abrupt change in annotation scale".

Curiously , this abrupt change in annotation scale does not happen if the text does not belong to any styles within Civil 3D. Stand alone text stays at the correct annotation scale and is not affected in the same way.

Please let me know if there is a procedure I am missing in my research.

Change your drawing scale to be the same as your Viewport scale and see if
that fixes your problem.

If I understand correctly - this is what you are
trying to achieve?

Joe,

Your image illustrates the way Civil 3D normally works. How do you prevent the text height changing with different viewport scales?

Just use regular MTEXT.

Joe:

Why do you mix anno scale with Civil 3D
Labels?   Other than the fact that when you change the anno scale
it Normally changes the Drawing Scale.  The Drawing scale sets the
Label size in Model Space and the Viewport Scale sets the Civil 3D label
within the Viewport.

Civil 3D Labels pre-dated the annotation
scale.

Bill,

This is not really an option, for all of the text in the Civil 3D objects.

Give this a shot:

On your Settings tab right-click the drawing name and go to Edit Drawing Settings.

On the first tab, Units and Zone, make sure your units are set to Feet (or Meters accordingly) and UNCHECK the box next to it, "Scale Objects Inserted from other drawings".

Go to paper space and regen.

Perhaps we need your definition of " .
face="Times New Roman">prevent the text height changing with different viewport
scales".  To me this means that if you have a plotted sheet and the text is
0.10" high in the 1" =20' scale it is also 0.10" tall in the 1' =100'
window.  This is the way Civil 3D labels work from layout to
layout.

I did nothing special. I created and placed a single instance of that label
and showed it in 3 different scaled vports and civil3d maintaint the
plotted height of .08 as I defined. You cant get this to happen?

I changed nothing but the vport scale. in my
example the drawing settings were actually 1" =40 feet

All I did was place a gen note in MS and open 3
vports scaled as indicated, I never touched anno scale - civil 3d made the
adjustment on its own.

Everyone thank you for your suggestions but we have still not nailed it.

The drawing scale in Edit Drawing Settings only works in Model Space, it has no effect in a viewport.

This is the situation:

The plan and profile drawing is finished and ready to plot (plot scale 1:1000, viewports set at 1:250.) We then want plot the drawing to show additional length in the plan and profile (still plot at 1:1 but change viewport to 1:500) leaving the labels at the original size. Civil 3D regens the viewport and the drawing looks a mess with text on top of text. We do not want to clean the drawing up for a temporary plot. I know the text will be small but this is accepted.

The only work around we have found is to scale the drawing surround, adjust the size (not scale of the veiwport) and plot at 1:2000.

I think what you are saying is the same thing that many of us have been saying ever since Autodesk introduced the Annotative Scale in Autocad 2008 - we want C3D labels to size based on Annotation Scale, not on Drawing Scale/Viewport Scale. (Or at least, have that option.)

Unfortunately, there is not currently a satisfactory solution to this issue, except for the sort of thing you mention, i.e. plot paperspace at 1:2 instead of at 1:1.

Try this.

Make your paper space viewport larger to encompass what you want to see. It
will go outside the paper margin, but that's ok. Print to a DWF using a
much larger paper size (viewport will still be 1:250). Plot the resulting
DWF at 1/2 scale (1:500).

If you are wanting the viewport one scale and the anno scale another try this:

For instance, if you need the anno scale to be 1" = 40' and you want your viewport to be zoomed at 1" = 20', in Paper Space set the anno scale to 1" = 40' and then click inside the viewport to make it active. Then use the "old" way of scaling a viewport by typing Z for Zoom, then type 1/20xp. Click back in Paper Space and select the viewport and note the VP Scale and Anno Scale should be set independent of one another.

Unfortunately, that does not produce the desired effect, as C3D labels still zoom in relation to the viewport scale, and not according to the Annotation scale.

Maybe I'm totally confused....wouldn't be the first time. But that's how I read this:

The plan and profile drawing is finished and ready to plot (plot scale 1:1000, viewports set at 1:250.) We then want plot the drawing to show additional length in the plan and profile (still plot at 1:1 but change viewport to 1:500) leaving the labels at the original size. Civil 3D regens the viewport and the drawing looks a mess with text on top of text. We do not want to clean the drawing up for a temporary plot. I know the text will be small but this is accepted.

Meaning that they want the C3D labels in one viewport to NOT scale up/down when they change the viewport scale. At least that's how I take "I know the text will be small...". Also I think by saying "leave the labels at the original size" actually means DON'T scale them up/down when I change viewports.

See the attached sreenshot with the method I posted above about manually entering the 1/20xp zoom scale.

If I'm still misunderstaning the scenario -nevermind. Maybe it will come in handy down the road!

Did you regen? As soon as you regen, those C3D labels will resize based on the viewport. They don't stay that size long enough to do a print.
