Solved: Civil 3D 2013 Export to Microdrainage/Windes

Hi,

I'm having a problem exporting a storm network I've created to microdrainage. I'm getting this come up: "Conversion from string "" to type 'integer' is not valid"

I've already re-named all the pipes to the microdrainage standards, and I'm using standard pipes and structures from the UKIE selection. Any ideas what is happening here?

Check the pipe names, the new windes seems to rename 1.000 to 1

Adjust all pipes from "1 to 1.000" etc and it will work fine.

All of the pipes have already been renumbered to microdrainage numbering - and the heads of each run begins *.000, then follows the normal windes sequence

Dear Raymon,

The Civil3D SWS import/export link does have its limitations, so it is possible that it is struggling to read the SWS for several reasons.

As Mike suggests some 3rd party links do seem to struggle with the missing ".000" from the "1.000". This means that the exported SWS file will contain "1" rather than "1.000" for the pipe number at the head of each run. However this has not been a big problem with the Civil3D link to my knowledge. The most common problem we see is when users try to import an SWS/FWS/EWS over the top of an existing Civil3D network. For whatever reason the Civil3D import/export seems to be a one way process, so the original Civil3D network needs to be deleted and then recreated from the updated SWS file.

We have notified them of this issue, along with others, but currently this remains unresolved even in 2014. As with all similar issues it is worth notifying Autodesk so they know action is needed from a user point of view. We are hoping to see the link updated to use the newer MDX format rather than the now obsolete SWS file, however so far we have seen no progress with this. Again user requests are likely to push this up their priorities so please feel free to request this from Autodesk.

The Export to SWS doesn't always work correctly where the headers are in the sws file.

Try this.. Open the sws file, paste the text below over the start header. Obviously stop at pipe 1.000

I suspect it has missed a line somewhere. Then you should be able to open it in windes.

Apologies, I just realised this is an export issue rather than an import issue. Normally these days issues seem to relate to importing rather than exporting so I answered on Autopilot!

The error you suggested is usually caused by Civil3D failing to export anything for the Page number in the Hard copy heading section to file on line 7. You can open the file in Notepad and then make one minor change as shown below:

Again this is an issue that should be resolved from the Autodesk end. However we have add a check for this in WinDes so if you are using W.12.6 or later you should not encounter this issue.

Thanks for your replies. The problem is that Civil 3D is failing to create the .sws file. I've tested this by creating a new dummy network in the same Civil 3D drawing, using the same surface, parts lists and structure/pipe rules, and it exports fine (well, fine enough, although the pipe sizes disappear).

I'm going to re-create the network from scratch as there have been multiple revisions to the newtork parameters whilst the network was worked on that I suspect are confusing the export function. If this fails, then I'll come right back to you 😉

I have encountered this many times. The problem is in the civil 3d application plugin writing the sws fiile. it is not that clever. See above posts.

I found that getting the naming right is key. Each series of pipes should be named as a separate branch when using the "rename pipes" option in the c3d winDES export utility.

I have the same problem in AutoCad Civil 3D 2016 using the "Autodesk Microdrainage Utility".

I have 3 pipe networks in the same file:

- 1st network (6Manholes and 5 pipes with the correct pipe names): export file created

- 2nd Network (4 manholes and 3 pipes with the correct pipe names😞 export file created

- 3rd network ( a lot of manhole and pipes with the correct pipe names😞 "Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. conversion from string "" to type 'integer' is not valid" ---> No export file created

Any workaround for this problem???

Trial and error I'm afraid, try swapping the naming about to see if it makes a difference or go through a sequence of deleting the pipes and trying to export until you find out what pipe is causing it

Just to clarify, the problem is not in the "Export to file" utility but in some pipe with wrong name/format. Is that correct?

Does the length and complexity of the pipe network affect the export process in some way?

Yes the utility is fine, its just how you have named the pipes.

The longest run should have the first number i.e. 1.000 to 1.012 then the next longest branch connecting into it should be 2.000 to 2.004 say

Hi,

I had the same problem recently. I was not able even to create the .sws (.ews in my case). It seems that the problem was the size of the network (162 pipes and 163 manholes). I finally split the network in 3 and I could export them.

Then I had 3 .ews files that should be merged in one. I tried to open Network1 in Drawnet CAD and paste Network2 and Network 3 in it, but Drawnet CAD does not identify the new pipes and manholes as a network, but as polylines and circles (obvious, but I had to try).

I finally opened the three different networks in a .txt editor (Notepad++ in my case) and copied Network2 and Network3 in Network1 )Without the headings).

Once you have this you can open that in Drawnet CAD and start working on it. It might rename some of the pipes, but it is not a big deal.

You are correct in what you say, the shear amount of pipes can cause the export difficulties.

The only problem of it renaming the pipes is the fact that you need to rename all your civil 3d pipes to make sense of it. Obviously pipes in 2018 will automatically rename when civil 3d brings them back in from microdrainage.

There are three types of networks:

.sws Surface water storm

.fws Foul water storm

.ews Existing water storm

If you import a .sws it is likely that Microdrainage changes all the diameters and levels. The reason could be to match it standards, but there is something else. However, if you import an existing network it keeps the levels and diameters as they are.

Yes, you will need to rename all the pipes in Civil 3D if you want to compare them against Microdrainage at some point (I did). If not, you can forget about it and overwrite the model once you export it back from Microdrainage.
