Thank you for your feedback. Please note that my comments about the graphics card were directed to the original poster (@civildja) whose card isn't marked as certified. The Quadro series, in general, is supported and the FX580, in particular, is supported. Certain drivers may be better than others, but the card is supported.
We are very interested in tracking down this issue about Civil3D/AutoCAD not responding that has been reported, but one that we haven't been able to nail down. Any specific information on how to reproduce would be appreciated.
Before you start throwing money at your machine you will want to do your due diligence and troubleshoot the problem. Does the behvior occur on other machines with similar hardware and OSl? Is it the file? Is it your default template? Have you tried a fresh install? Have you tried using a default Autocad profile? Is it your Antivirus? Is it your network?
Check your Hardware Events to see if something is misfiring. For example, my Nvidia card for the past few days would drag the entire system down. Turned out the NView graphics driver (not needed) crashed - locking up the system (it was a brand new updated driver)
Turning off NView eliminated the problem.
Another item - depending on the card - a clean install of the video card driver may be warranted. That is uninstall the prior Nvidia driver completely - returning the machine down to plain old VGA before reinstalling the new driver.
A sure test would be to borrow a video adapter from another machine or elsewhere and see if it helps. Even your onboard video would be worth trying. If it helps then you know it is the video adapter.

Honestly, turning off WIn7's Aero Scheme seems to solve a lot more problems for so many users it's worth doing first, along with turning off UAC of course, and toning down R2011:
- Turn off the modeless layer palette: use the old Layer dialog box (set LAYERDLGMODE to 0)
- Turn off any palette transparency.
- Turn off SelectionCycling, SC button at bottom of screen
- Turn off Hardware Acceleration within AutoCAD, icon on the lower right near workspace and toolbar lock.
- Set hpdlgmode to 1 and/ or hpquickpreview to off.
- Change rollovertips to 0 (off)
- Set qpmode to 0 (off)
- Set SHOWLAYERUSAGE to 0 (off).
Maybe even turning the ribbon off by picking a classic workspace as a lst resort.
I'd check some of these & see if they help.
When this "not responding" issue occurs (besides the time when you're scrolling), what actions/commands are you running? Is it a CPU-intensive task like rebuilding a corridor, or are does this happen even when the application is idle?
What do you typically do when this occurs? Do you wait? Does Civil 3D start responding again? Do you kill the task? I've seen another post here where the poster said that simply invoking the Task Manager seems to bring Civil 3D to life again. Have you noticed anything like that?"
The "not responding" issue can occur anytime and I typically will kill the process after about 30 secs - simply invoking the task manager doesn't make a difference. I have noticed it apparently occuring after an autosave. I have also copied my project to the C: drive to try and isolate any potential nertwork issues but the same not responding still occurred. It never seems to generate an errors report which is a bit annying when trying to troubleshoot.
On some occasions, "Not Responding" appears in the title bar but after 10 or 15 secs the program starts again - generally on starting the program.

One suggestion is to load FileMon which is a utility that lists file read & write activity in real time for your operatiion system. It can reveal when the OS gets hung on a file such a a missing font or if the Antivirus is scanning something. Do a web search for FILEMON.
I have process monitor installed (filemon no longer available).
Problem is I have no idea what it may mean.
When acad hangs there are numerous "NAME NOT FOUND" results.

We were using the Certified 8.634.0.0000 driver up until a week ago when we decided to try the 8.773.0.0000 driver. I don't see that it did anything label the video card as uncertified.
If I am working in a drawing and need to do a regen, both AutoCAD and Civil 3D will often stop responding for about 60 to 90 seconds. Sometimes it will only be 20 seconds or up to 10 minutes. If it takes longer than 20 minutes I will terminate the process, but that has only happened in a few instances.
I can recreate the problem by opening any drawing and inserting a aerial SID image. Zooming out and zooming in to an area outside of the boundary of the image will cause AutoCAD to regen and stop responding. Zooming to extents will force a regen and cause AutoCAD to stop responding. Zooming into a small area on the Aerial will again cause AutoCAD to stop responding.
This is not to say that Aerial Images cause the problem, it's just that I know I can recreate it consistently in that manner. I have started new drawings from scratch that have caused this problem after throwing in a few lines, panning and zooming, a regen is all it takes to make it stop responding. What is it doing?
We have completed a full uninstall and installation of both AutoCAD 2011 and Civil 3D 2011
We have completely uninstalled and reinstalled all ATI software and drivers
Loading files is also unusually slow. If I have opened two files, it takes an unusual amount of time to go from one file to the other.
I managed to force Civil 3D 2011 to get stuck on a long one, it took nearly 10 minutes to resolve. I opened a fresh instance of Civil 3D and opened several files. I have 5 DWG files opened in this case. It's a survey with an attached Aerial and to force the problem I zoomed in/out, panned around. I executed a regenall and it stopped responding. I have attached screenshots. I also have the problem details shown below.
