Civil 3d 2010 wont open

I every one. I'm gonna repost a message from days ago to try for more input. Thanks to all

Hi everyone. So I click on the C3D icon on my desktop as always, a moment of hesitation, looks like it's gonna load then BAM, an Autocad message

"Unable to run AutoCAD, this may be due to one of the fallowing reasons:

   1) This version of autocad was not installed properly; In this case you may wish to reinstall Autocad

   2) You do not have sufficient rights to run AutoCAD

I do most of my work in land Desktop 04 and only occasionally use C3D however it has worked fine in the past. I did do a system restore about a week ago, this would be the first use since. Could this have an effect? I uninstalled then reinstalled C3D but to no avail. I know that to do a clean install some editing must be done to the (XP sp3) registry. I hesitate to make these edits because of the multiple autodesk products loaded. Any ideas or direction would be greatly appreciated. All we need are software problems on top of this surveyor killing economy!

Many thanks in advance!!

Michael

Hi Michael,

It certainly looks that you ended up with corrupted install. There is a possibility you accidentally removed/edited some registry keys with restore. Knowing that you tried repair already, your best bet would be to perform clean install. Keep in mind that if you follow the steps precisely you should not be having any problems performing this procedure. You are basically only removing entries related to Civil 3D.

In case you decided to go that route please use this document: http://usa.autodesk.com/getdoc/id=TS15031904

Good luck!

Ok, I'm going to edit the registry as per TS15031904. However when I look in the for the subkeys

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AutoDesk\AutoCAD\R18.0\ACAD-8000:409 in AutoCAD I only find R15 and R16, no R18.  The same applies to LOCAL_USER. Why would this be and where do I go from here?

 Thanks Michael

If these entries are missing that could mean they were removed by uninstall, which is good. One more thing; Do you have 64-bit OS, because you may need t ocheck that Wow6432Node under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE.

In any case, just continue with clean install and let us know if it worked.

OK I removed the associated folders and reinstalled. fist attempt to open and I get the same message (see previouse post). I'm running 32Bit xp.  I NEED to be able to use this. Could there be a problem with registration? I'm not familiar with ' permissions '. Could there be a problem there? How do I check this? Any Idea where to go from here? Help:(

I'm sorry, I misspoke. It's not permissions, it's rights. One of the possible causes (per message) was "you do not have sufficient rights to run Autocad" wich made me think of a registration issue.

Hi Mike-

The "you do not have sufficient rights to run Autocad" is usually a permissions issue. Please have a look at this link which described how to create a local administrator account on Windows XP: http://ketiv.com/support/tech-tips/how-to-create-a-local-administrator-account-for-windows-xp

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the quick respons guys. So I start to follow the directions to creat a local admin acount in windows xp as per the link you provided. I right click "my coputer" click manage and I'm looking at the 'computer managment' window. I look for the Local users and groups' section but its not there. I have all the others, just not that one. Does the lack of this section give any insight to the problem I'm having? Why would this section not be present on my machine? Again, thank you.

Expected AutoCAD startup behavior

To help troubleshoot user profile problems, refer to the following description of the expected AutoCAD startup procedure:

  1. When AutoCAD is launched by any user, the existence of the following folders and registry keys is validated:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Autodesk\C3D 2010
  • C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\C3D 2010
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R18.0\ACAD-8000:409

2.  If these folders or registry keys do not exist, a secondary installer process (Msiexec) is launched to configure the default content and settings in these locations. The default content is stored in the hidden folder <InstallDir>\UserDataCache (the default location is C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2006\UserDataCache). If these folders and registry keys exist (even if they contain limited or incorrect data), AutoCAD will still launch.

3.  The normal launch sequence continues and the required components (files, menus, toolbars, and so on) are loaded

-----------

Check if any of the above exist and if they do delete them, then try running civil 3d, it should reinstall for your user profile.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the response. I found and deleted the files listed above. I opened regedit found the found the /R18 and deleted folder ACAD-8000:409 and contents. I relaunched civil 3D and it proceeded to reinstall the missing data. "gathering required info" and soforth. Upon completion I Got the same error, and no Go. I do not know what to do. We have a big project on the way (we think) and we must be ready to create some machine control models. If anyone has any ideas, (talking to you Autodesk) Please let me know. Thank you.
