Does anyone know what major changes there are in 2008?

Go to www.autodesk.com/civil3d and click on the link: "Check out the latest features".

Here it is for you:

I checked that out...didn't see much that explains the major changes though. Do you know specifically what they may have added/changed? Anything comparable to the addition of the survey options in 2007?

You should check out todays webcast where they are scheduled to do an "in-depth" intro.

if you go to www.civil3d.com, you can easily find the posts about our favorite stuff in 2008 by going into the white sidebar. there are categories about halfway down the page that you can click on, and one of them is 2008. that will lead you posts we have tagged with 2008.

I'm not very impressed... our subscription renewal cost how much?

Why do the parcel wishlist items continue to be ignored?

Not really I am just trying to bring Jason's hits up so he can win the big
prize.

Independent layer option is there, but it doesn't do anything for parcels. There is no midpoint grip on parcel arc segments, which makes it impossible to make edits after the fact. No LTGEN option or equivalent. Project incorporation to allow multiple sets of styles for parcels and parcel segments, without having to double label and create extraneous non-standard layers. A friggin COMMA in the area label ! (without having to use a workaround). A total line in parcel area tables. etc.

Aside from bug fixes, there have been no real changes to the parcel functionality for 2 versions now.

I thought the ROW was going to be made dynamic in this release, but it's not listed as a new feature.

For the 2007 release, I let it slide because of the huge improvements to surface generation and grading tools. What's the excuse this time?

So your biggest beef is with parcels?

If that's all you do with Civil 3D then maybe it's not for you. The rest of
us love the new functionality, stability, and speed that 2008 provides.

If it truly is more stable and faster, that's great... $1000 per seat great? I don't know. I don't reall feel like I should have to pay for software to be made "more stable". Even Microsoft doesn't charge for that.

I'm a little disgruntled in that they have improved on almost everything but parcels. However, that is hardly all I do. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure what new functionality you are so impressed with, but I was perfectly happy with surfaces, alignments and profiles in 2007. The biggest chalenge with those has been teaching the harcore LDD staff how to modify their workflow and way of thinking.

That's an absolute truth.
But trying to do that with an unstable platform is unbelieveably painful.
I think it was the absolute best decision to focus the 2008 product developement on increased speed and dependability.
If the 2008 release makes the amount of progress that SP3 did for 2007 I can't wait to get it on the floor.

>> I'm not sure what new functionality you are so impressed with, but I was perfectly happy with surfaces, alignments and profiles in 2007. <<

How about having it be faster and more consistant.

In our case it's more about the grading tools working dependably.

You got to pay that no matter what. Be greatful that the guys in Manchester have focused on what is genuinely important.
After all they operate under budget and time constraints just like we do.

Good work Dan, Dave, Peter and everyone else.

The features I think I'm most impressed with is the way they changed how
labels integrate with their respective objects. We spoke and they listened
and now labels are FAR easier to deal with, with respect to layers and
adding generic text etc.

Next is the Plans/Production tools and how it integrates with the Sheet Set
Manager and data references. i have to do that stuff anyway, now that the
software does it for me, GREAT!

There's more, but those are my favorites.
