I checked the parts in the catalog and the the materials are set, but when I create a network the material is never populated in the part. I never noticed this before is this a 2014 thing?

Is the custom Pipe Catalog folder properly mapped?
We have several Materials added which are used within Pipe Label Styles etc.
They're doing their job here with 2014 SP1.
This is what I have: Looks right to me?

Not a 2014 thing. More of a you and yours thing. 😉 Works fine for me in 2014. Are you sure the materials were not purged from the file? Try reloading them with the Material Browser.

Joe,
That is correct OOTB catalog location but if you have custom material values added
they would be found in the C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\C3D 2014\enu\Pipes Catalog\
US Imperial Pipes\AeccSharedPropertyLists.xml file.
If the date is 4/28/10 the AeccSharedPropertyLists.xml file is likely default.
Could it be that you had this set in 2012 etc. and need to copy that catalog somewhere
& map it? Could it contain your custom material values?

Sorry I thought you were talking about material rendering.... 😮 Yes you would need a realistic view style set to see the materials rendered.
Buuut... I think the issue is the material name is not populating in the pipe label style??
If so edit the style. In the componet editor make sure the material link has not blown up due to copy/pasting or using ImportStylesAndSetting.
You will know if the link is blown when you select it. A good link will not let you place the cursor within the <MATERAL> text string. If you try to it should select the entire string correct? If your sursor can be placed within that string and not select it all automatically then is is blown and needs to be replaced.

Joe,
Here's an example of Material values in our AeccSharedPropertyLists.xml file.
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\C3D 2014\enu\Pipes Catalog\
US Imperial Pipes\AeccSharedPropertyLists.xml
Just browse to this location & open the file in notepad.
If you don't see the Material values you're expecting then they don't exist where your
expecting & where their presence is needed.
Thanks Jay

I am wondering if the part list in the working file may have originated from another file AND an older part list...
Did you confirm the catalog path and run PartCatalogRegen?

What happens if you try to map to that 2012 network location if it's still there?
Any Materials present then?
Try the cat regen if that does not work I would try finding the correct xml file as Jay mentioned and see if replacing or editing it works.
As a last resort you may have to recreate the parts in the parts list... 😞

Did you migrate the part catalogs as recommended for a version change?
Migrate only the parts you have created. Do not copy the whole catalog because additional content may be included with the new release.
Each time you create new custom pipes or structures in a catalog, additional files are created in the following locations:
