Cannot create a data shortcut for a surface

I'm trying to create a data shortcut for one of my surfaces but it won't let me. It can't be updated because it is being use by another application

I'm under a horrible deadline and I hope someone sees this.

Try saving and closing first. If that doesn't help, try creating another new surface and add all of the same definition data. 

Also, check to see in your windows task manager that another process of acad.exe is not running.
