cannot connect to ArcSDE without making an ArcGIS connection first

Previously I had Civil 3D 2010 and in order to make a successful connection I had to copy 3 dll files into the bin folder.  Now that I have Civil 3D 2013 and running ArcSDE 10 Server copying the 3 dll's does not allow me to connect to ArcSDE.  Below is the box I get when the login fails.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Please help!
