Can't snap to point symbols

For some reason we cannot snap to the node on several of our point symbols.  I cannot see anything different when compared to the other point symbols that we can snap too.  Basically if i try to draw a line of obtain a distance using the NOD osnap on these point symbols i get nothing, its like they dont have a NOD to snap too.

Any ideas? This is quite annoying.

Open up your Transparent Command toolbar, there is an icon for point number.  Not sure if your familiar with transparent commands but they are to used with in a command say for drawings a polyline.  So if type PL to start polyline then type 'PN to activate the Point number transparent command.  Then you just type the point number or range if sequential you can also use commas for different point number sequence.

Example.

PL, 'PN, 1-4,6,9,10.  This one command will draw a polyline to each of those points.

Can also be used with 3DPL, lines, etc.

Yes I'm aware of transparent commends and use them regulary and use the one you referred to in your post.  However, that was not the point of my question.  It's much easier to just keep the OSNAPS on that we need when running inquiries and things of that nature.  With that said, it's not working properly and not snapping to some of our blocks and we would like to know why.

Here's to wishing for a 'PO osnap that snaps to your point no matter where you click on the point or point label.

Hi,

Any help out there with this?  I just came across the same thing in a drawing - C3D 2012.  I've got quite a few wetland flags to connect.  If I switch to other point styles they all work fine for OSNAP NOD, just the wetland point style seems "broken".

Thanks

I've experienced this too, no idea why.

If you have all your points in a group you could use that to temporarily override their style, so you can snap to them

Thanks Troma,

I used the point object transparent command, but was just hoping that there was a solution/reason for the glitch.

Is it a stock symbol or one you created yourself.

For us it was a symbol using a block.

The block was a donut, with inside diameter zero, and ouside diameter of 0.01

Now I think of it, I should have been able to snap to 'Center'.  Don't know if I tried that.  It was a while ago.  I just know that I couldn't snap to 'Node'.

There's no way I know of to include and Autocad point or custom marker style with a block within the style. I'd thing that if you use an AtuoCAD Block to the point marker. You'd have to include an AutoCAD Point in the block. You'd either need a point style that wont show it when plotted or make it a non-plotting color.

Now, I thought all cogo points had a 'Node' snap simply by virtue of being cogo points. (And that these ones had something strange going on.) But you're saying that it depends entirely on the point style being used.

There you go, challenging my worldview and broadening my horizons again, Allen!

It seems like that should be the case, doesn't it?  While most of our symbols do behave in that manner, anything created with a donut will not have a node osnap, nor will it have a center osnap, basically making it unsnappable.  Kind of a pain.

Don't take this one as gospel. I usually try to confirm things I'm not 100% sure of before posting. But today's been very busy. So I'm going from memory on this one. It's not something I've run in to.

Here's what you need to do. Insert the block for the point style that does not have a node snap.

Do a block edit to the block and save the changes.

Then update/refresh the drawing.

That should resolve your issue. I have had a couple of blocks that were like that, sometimes it's better to even insert it and xplode and recreate the block with the same name.

What edit would you perform on the block?

It does'nt matter, change it to a layer save it, and the edit it again, change it back and save it.

On one occacion I have a block using a mask for my found iron rod, I deleted the mask and inserted it again.

The block is one that was created using autocad.  It is controlled by the desc key for both the point style and point label style.  This is the same with many, and all, other point styles used in the drawing that have OSNAP to node capability.  I will try using the block editor to alter it.

I did import using a txt file as opposed to the survey tab, however there are other point styles used for points in the txt file that work just fine.

Thank you to all for the assistance.

I currently have a point style that uses a donut.  It has OSNAP nod capabilities.

I used the block editor in the drawing and deleted a line, saved.  It didn't allow OSNAP to node function still.  I put the line back and still nothing.

Allen,

I have created many a point style of my own.  They have all allowed OSNAP to nod with the nod being the insertion point of the block.  Consequently, the point style that I'm having an issue with doesn't allow for the INS OSNAP either, there is an INS but it is the insertion of the point label style.  Oddly enough if I edit the point label style and change the text anchor point the text adjusts correctly but the insertion point stays at the previous location.

Interesting. I haven't looked in to this too deeply. I responded with a "what I would try if" type of response.

When we are doing manual line connection. We usually have either the All_Points group or a Field point group at the top of the list. When we get close to plotting we then push them to the bottom and allow the WV, MH, UP, etc. groups to take precedent.

I just spent a couple hours with this. First, two workarounds, then some theory:

Workaround #1  (Good)

While you are editing the drawing, use a default point style for the group. When done editing, switch to your custom point marker style.

Workaround #2  (Better)

Put the custom block as part of the Point Label Style instead of the Point Style. In the Point Style, choose either "Use AutoCAD POINT for Marker" or pick one of the "Custom" markers that is innocuous and compatible with your custom block (such as the simple point one on the far left).  Then, in the Point Label Style Composer, go to the layout tab. To the right of the Component Name pull down box, there is another pull down box. Click the down arrow fo the that box next to the "A+", then click "Block". Here you can choose the custom block, then, the rest of the options should be easy enough if you've made it this far, they are similar to the options in the Point Style composer.

Now you have the best of both worlds, a custom point marker that you can also snap to with the node snap.

Theory

As I was searching for a workaround I found the same behavior noted by wetsnow: "Oddly enough if I edit the point label style and change the text anchor point the text adjusts correctly but the insertion point stays at the previous location." I believe that this is because that insertion point is not really for the text.. I believe it is generated by an error in the automatic scaling of the marker. You can see this error even when switching between two of the built-in "Custom" marker points, for example between the far left point custom marker and the plus moves the mystery insertion point even when it shouldn't, and with no corresponding change in the label.

I'm using Civil 3d 2012 64 bit, with SP4.
