Re: C3D 2013: Input Pt#,XYZ of Points by Using "Points from txt file"

07-25-2013 09:43 AM in reply to: TRogers

Hi Todd, Thanks for your response and corrected CDC8ptsPENZfor3D.dwg.

#1) I opened the dwg file and got the 4 points on the [Top]{2D Wireframe] screen.  I changed "2D Wireframe" to "(3D) Wireframe" and clicked on the "HOUSE" sign and tried to rotate the TOP-E-W-S-N. I did not see anything appeared on the screen for the 8 points I input!!??  I am completely lost now!  Please tell me how I can get/see the 8 points on the (3D) Wireframe and display the data/table of the corrected Point Number, Easting, Northing and Elevation for the 8 points.

#2) I made a csv file of PENZ space-delimited format for the 8 points again - per neilyj. Then I tried to do the "Point from File" process and I saw the following:

Import Points

    Selected File

         C:\User...\CDC8points.csv

Specify point file format (Filtering ON):

          ENZ (comma delimited)

          XYZ_Intensity (c....)

          NEZ  (c...)

          XYZ_RGB  (c...)

          PNE (c...)

          XYZ_LIDAR (c...)

The columns for PENZ space-delimited format of my CDC8points.csv can not match the columns of the 6 selections "ENZ", "XYZ_Intensity", "NEZ", "XYZ_RGB", "PNE", and "XYZ_LIDAR" at all!!??   (By the way, I remember I used "ENZ" to input my TXT file for CDC8ptsPENZforC3D.dwg that was wrong and you just correct/fixed).  Please englightened me on (i) what I did wrong in inputting the TXT file, (ii) how you correct the wrong CDC8ptsPENZforC3D.dwg,  (iii) how to specify point file format (Filtering ON), and (iv) what is the so-called "one" that was provided (your word).    Please kindly help and respond again.

Many Thanks,

Scott Chang

Hi Allen, Thanks for your resonses.

I found the detailed instructions of "Importing Points from Text File" in Pages 95-97 of Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 by Louisa Holland and Kati Mercier, (published by SYBEX). I saw the PNEZD (space delimited)/(comma delimited) the Authors used in the Filtering ON.  I tried to import the csv file of my new CDC8points into the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013.  I can not get the PNEZD to appear, when the Filtering is ON.  I tried to turn it off without any luck!!??  How can I turn the Filtering from "ON" to "OFF"? Please see the attached file and tell me how to get the "Points from File" done correctly.

Thanks again,

Scott Chang

Hi Allen, Thanks for your nice response.

It worked and I got  the PENZ format to work for me to do the"Points from File" job successfully. I did not know it worked for the first time and I repeated the "Points from File" process. Now I have 2 sets of the 8 points of CDC8ptsPENZforC3D.dwg.  5 questions to ask you: (1) How can I get rid of the second set of the 8 points in this dwg? (2) How can I display the "Point Number" to the 8 points?  (3) How can I see the "Properties" of the set of the 8 points? Is it possible to annotate/label the 8 points? and (5) Is it possible to add the Attribute Table (i.e. add more columns after the "Elevation" column) to this dwg?  Please help and respond again.

Thanks again,

Scott Chang

P.S. In your last thread, you posted your screenshot on the Main Page of your response. What kind of the file extenson is it? How did you paste the sceenshot on the Main Page on the text page?

Scott,

I've been thinking about your post and whether to answer it or not. My link to the help files in my previous post was a hint that you might want to search the help files for answers first. We never want to discourage new users or students from posting. Questions that appear simple to experienced user are certainly allowed. We were all inexperienced at one time.

However most of use who frequent these forums do hope that users and students will make some attempt to search for answer from a prepared source first. Things like the help files, the Autodesk Knowledge Base, tutorials provided with the program and many available on Youtube or blog sites. Google or other search engines are good ways to find these.

Again. I do not want to discourage you. But you're obviously just learning and we can't turn this group into an online training course. Now lets see about your questions.

1) Erase

2) Learn about Point Label Styles

3) In the Toospace palette on the Prospector tab select the All Points group

(what I had posted was from another users drawing that I was helping and I mixed it in with yours)

To label see Point Label Styles.

5) Yes. Search for XDef in help. You will have to create an external Database.

Hi Allen, Thank you very much for your nice and valuable help/responses.

I used ArcGIS 10.1 and Spatial Analysis and Decision Assistance (SADA) Version 5 to get 3D presentaion of Spatial and Non-spatial (chemical results/data) information for my sampling locations with 2 depths in each sampling location. I guess that AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 can do the better 3D presentation of the Spatial and Non-spatial information for my sampling locations with 2 depths in each location more vividly. I will do more digging and searching on Google and the C3D HELP.

Many Thanks again,

Scott Chang

Thank you Scott for taking my comments so well. I was a little hesitant in posting them. Civil 3D is a very worthwhile program to learn. However it is also quite difficult to learn. I don't know what your employment situation is. But if you plan to pursue the use of Civil 3D. I'd suggest asking for some training. In person is best but there are also training CD and online courses.

And if you're stuck after your research. Please post with your question. Make sure to start a new post if they're on a different subject. The more users you reach the better.
