C3D 2007 crashing while sitting idle.

I have installed C3D on my production machines when it arrived with the belief that it would be the big bad program it was billed at when I attended AU 2006. Since then it has corrupted drawings (which thankfully were backed up). The program will crash on its own while sitting idle, and lately while attempting to open ANY drawing that was started in C3D 2006. I have tried recovering and auditing which turns up 0 errors, then I try to save the drawing which results in a crash. Now it is at the point that any C3D 2006 drawing will crash as soon as any modification is made.

1) What are your system specs?

2) Is it just sitting there, or might it be attempting an
auto-save?

3) Have you tried the proxygraphics fix?

I am running an AMDX2 dual core 2.4 ghz, 4 GB corsair RAM, dual raptor 2 HDD in stripe mode, an 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 7900GT card with dual 19" viewsonic monitors...so my setup should not be a problem.
anytime I try to save it will crash with an unhandled fatal error. It will do this in any drawing I open and autosave could be causing the unattended crashes but obviously I dont dare work on anything if I can't save.

Once again, have you tried the proxygraphics fix? Set PROXYGRAPHICS to
0 and that may help the file saving issue.

You're right, the machine probably isn't the problem. Wow. 😉

Setting the proxygraphics to 0 seems to have fixed it. Thanks

Don't thank me - I got it from Dan Philbrick.

Thanks, Dan!

Got any insight into what the proxygraphic switch is, or know where I can educate myself on it?

Thanks,
Alex

From the help file -

(note - PROXYGRAPHICS set to O does not save an image with the drawing,
a bounding box is displayed instead. PROXYGRAPHICS set to 1 saves the
image with the drawing.)

Custom objects provide additional capabilities to the program and
related products. When the application that created the custom object is
not available, a proxy object is substituted in its place.

A custom object is a type of object created by an ObjectARX® (AutoCAD
Run-Time Extension) application, which typically has more specialized
capabilities than standard AutoCAD objects. Custom objects include
parametric solids (Autodesk® Mechanical Desktop), intelligently
interactive door symbols (Autodesk Architectural Desktop), polygon
objects (Autodesk Map™), and associative dimension objects (AutoCAD and
AutoCAD LT).

In addition to Autodesk, many software vendors use ObjectARX to write
programs that create graphical and nongraphical custom objects that are
useful in their AutoCAD based applications.

Proxy Objects
A proxy object is a substitute for a custom object when the ObjectARX
application that created the custom object is not available to AutoCAD
or other host applications. Later, when the application is available,
the proxy object is replaced by the custom object.

Proxy objects have significantly reduced capabilities compared to their
corresponding custom objects. The extent to which proxy objects can be
edited is determined by the parent ObjectARX application. For example,
operations such as erasing and moving an object, or changing object
properties, may or may not be possible on a proxy object, depending on
the application that created it.

When you open a drawing, you might see a Proxy Information dialog box.
The dialog box tells you the total number of proxy objects in the
drawing (both graphical and nongraphical) and the name of the missing
application and provides additional information about the proxy object
type and display state. You can use the dialog box to control the
display of proxy objects.

Object Enablers
An object enabler is a tool that provides specific viewing and standard
editing access to a custom object in the host applications when the
application that created the custom object is not present.

Object Enablers allow custom objects in a drawing to behave with more
intelligence than proxy graphics. Object enablers also facilitate
workgroup collaboration when using other Autodesk products.

If the ObjectARX application is not installed on your system, you can
check for available Object Enablers on the Web. For example, if you
receive a drawing that contains objects that were created in Autodesk
Architectural Desktop, but you don't have that application installed on
your system, the AEC Object Enabler is downloaded so you can view those
drawings as they were intended. To control whether the program checks
for Object Enablers, use the Live Enabler settings on the System tab of
the Options dialog box.

For a complete list of the currently available Object Enablers, go to
the Autodesk Web site at http://www.autodesk.com/enablers.

Object Classification
If an application such as Autodesk Map was used to add a feature
(object) classification to an object, you can view the classification in
the Properties palette in the Class Name entry. If the object's
classification is missing from the associated classification (XML) file,
or if the associated classification file is missing, an exclamation mark
is displayed in the Class Name entry. For information about what is
required to create a feature classification, see the Autodesk Map
documentation.

You can also use the Quick Select feature to select objects by their
Class names and Class properties.

Its not so great to have proxygraphics off.
I use Watercad and want people without watercad to see the custom stuff it does.
We should not have to cut out features of acad to get C3D to work...
But, at least we know the workaround.
