Basic area label

Asked this about a year and a half ago when we converted from Survcadd and still haven't found any solution and now that I've read 2013 is going to include line labeling capabilities by selecting 2 points rather than selecting linework. Is there going to be a way to label an area without creating a closed polyline or parcel, where it works the way a hatch works. So if I selecting in the middle of multiple individual intersecting lines, it labels the area.

Found this lisp from a previous discussion group seems to work pretty good and exactly what I was looking for, Was wondering if someone could look to see where I could eliminate the number and just display the area. Would like the area to read on the top line 43,560 SF and on the next line 1.00 AC.

I've just tuned the brilliant lisp by Tcorey, in order to match the Neilyj request - run the attached file issueing SQM

Thanks for the update - but it doens't seem to work correctly. It displays odd results on the command line and doesn't add the text to the drawing

I'm sorry, Neil, but in my Map2006 it works perfectly, as you can see in the attached file.

If i find a free hour today, I'll try to download a C3D trial to test it: stay tuned.

Basing myself on your screenshot, I corrected the routine: please run it with SQM4NEIL

It doesn't work for me under Map2006, and what about you?

P.S.

To see the "2" superscript, you must use a font supporting Unicode, e.g. simplex.shx or Truetype.

Getting there - but the text height as input (5 in this case) is also passed to the rotation parameterSmiley Sad

As stated by Timmy "The current text style must have a 0 height", but actually yours appears as follows:

so try to set 0 in your ANN2MM style, then run the attached file with AREALABEL

You are welcome, and pay attention to this point: in the last AREALABEL.LSP I've added a command to erase the temporary boundary at each loop, so the drawing stays light.

Corrected, now it shows a continuous result on two lines (run with SJG):

Carlson (SurvCADD) is very rough around the edges, but I'll give them credit for having a plethora of simple tools like you mention - things that require 8 steps, lisp, etc. to do in Civil 3D (and LDT). Autodesk could learn a lot by taking at look...

That is definitely an area that could use some work. For new users there is a lot to digest when you need to get the work done. The user has to know the command and where it is executed from (toolspace, ribbon commandline). As for the seasoned vet this is just traffic in your workflow.

Another is a simple point to point inverse.

In Carlson:

  1. Type in "i"
  2. <enter the first pt #>
  3. <enter the second pt #>
  4. voila, the result.
  5. repeat steps 2 and 3 to repeat

In Civil 3D:

  1. Click Analyze tab
  2. Click on Inquiry Tool
  3. Click on the drop down
  4. Expand the point section
  5. Click on 'point inverse'
  6. Click in the field for point 1 number
  7. Move hand to keyboard and enter the first point number
  8. Move hand back to mouse and click in the field for point 2 number
  9. Move hand back to keyboard and press enter.
  10. Result
  11. Repeat steps 6,7,8,9 to repeat, until you close the palette, then repeat 1-10

Sounds like another area that could benefit from allowing the use of TAB and ENTER like a spreadsheet.

Yep we need to do a lot of navigating in this app. I just changed my default staoff lbl style for sections on a flood study. 9 clicks since toolspace was off.Now if only the Addlabels dialog could actually do that I could get back to the study.

Yes. OOTB it's very kludgy. That's why I simplify things with toolpallets and aliases. I type IV which starts the CgList command then either pick the point nodes or use the 'PN or 'PO transparent commands. I also have "Line and Arc Information" (CgList) in a toolpallet and a 3rd party app [SmartDraft] that sets D to give the bearing and distance between two points.

The process can be simplified in Civil3D by grabbing AECCINV in the Free Stuff section of the site below.

  1. Type INUM or INAM (depending on whether numbers or names are used).
  2. Enter the First Point ID.
  3. Enter the Second Point ID.
  4. The results are displayed.
  5. Press Up+Arrow and Enter to repeat.
