ArcGrid to DEM

I have NED elevation data that I obtained from a seamless data server in
ArcGrid format. I want to create a surface from the data but as far as I
know I need to convert it to DEM format first. The server only provides the
data in ArcGrid, BIL, GoTiff and GRIDFLOAT formats. I can't find a
translator and I don't have ArcGis here. How can I get this data into a
surface model?

I was expecting you would have an answer on this Murph.

I'm disappointed that we have to go through such a convoluted process to get
the data into a surface. Someone needs to develop a convertor!

I think Terry D. is working on one if he doesn't have it already.

In Civil 3D 2009 - Grid Surface from DEM the file formats include:

1. USGS DEM
2. GEOTIFF
3. ESRI ASCII Grid (.asc)
4. ESRI ASCII Grid (.txt)
5. ESRI Binary Grid (.adf)

Enjoy,

Peter,

I cannot find the procedure for adding .adf data into a surface. Could you
direct me to the help topic or outline the steps?

Oops, I had opened 2008 by mistake. In 2009 the file format is available.
However C3D crashes when I select the .adf file. I'll keep trying.

Create a new TIN surface (You can also go with New DEM and just browse,
but you can't do coordinate transforms with that last time I looked.)
Expand the Definition branch
Right-click on DEM Files and select Add.
Click the browse button in the upper right.
Change the file extension to ADF.
Find your data and enjoy your GIS goodness.

Hope this helps.

I tried adding the .adf data every way I could but the .adf file crashes
C3D. I re-downloaded the data as Geotiff and that works but I can't
transform either the data when adding it to the surface or the surface
afterward from WGS84 to state plane. Is that a limitation of the GeoTiff or
will I be able to transform the surface if I use the .adf format?

Take GridFloat. MWImport should import it and MWSurfaces Grid Edit
should convert it to DEM. The extensions should be FLT & HDR, choose
"ESRI ArcView Binary Grid (*.hdr)"

I'm working on the others. Email me if you have questions.

Neil

As the NED information is derrived from USGS 30 meter DEMs you may want to use the DEM. Additionally USGS has outputted some areas in 10 meter DEMs these would create much more useable data for surface creation.

Some software packages have the ability to reproject these DEMs. You will need to check the software you are using for this ability.

Below is a link to a clearinghouse for this type of data in your area.

I am finding the dataservers with the most current data are only providing
it in the formats I mentioned Mike. This seems to be a trend. The National
Map for example is a key source of GIS data apparently and it does not offer
DEM's anymore. There are now 10 meter (1/3 second arc) datasets available
but I haven't found any in DEM format.

It it an out of memory crash? Or is it a fatal error?

The few ADFs I've worked with are very large, and if I create a DEM surface from them it will result in an out of memory error.

If I create a regular TIN surface, create a data clip around a smaller area, then add the ADF through the definition it will successfully create a surface.

The adf files are only 600 k so it is not a memory issue. I've tried with 2
different files with the same results. I'd attach one but the server
won'tlet it through. If
you use Murph's Map technique it works, but I can't get it into a surface
using the Surface tools. You can also try downloading some data from the
national map to see if you can get it to work. Make sure to try a 10 meter
(1/3 arc second) sample.

I now see Neil.

I was also crashing using the NED ASF files. Selecting and analyzing the ASF file would result in a fatal error. I can confirm that a few other ASF files from other sources do seem to work, but there is obviously some problem with the NED ASF files.

I posted one of the files I had trouble with to the Customer files forum.
It's a bout 500k in size. Topic: NED ArcGrid. Can anyone make it work?

C3D2009 is supposed to import ADF files under Surface > Import DEM.
However I can't figure out which of the 6 files should be selected, they
all (unless I missed one) give a fatal error.

The file with the largest file size is what Murph said to use in his Map
approach, but since you tried them all couldn't get any of them to work then
the problem seems to be a defect. I'll repost to get Attention to the issue.

Does somebody have a solution for this problem? I have ESRI GIS adf files from 20kb to 400kb, but all results into crashes, also with the solution to build first a surface and import the adf into it. I use Civil3D 2009 SP1 and desperate searching for the solution Edited by: ErikVaasen8067 on Feb 2, 2009 8:28 AM
