AECC point conversion not taking descriptions

I was given a file with LDT points in it that show point#,Elev, Desc. When I convert the description  turn into a number. How does that happen and how can I change it to convert the description correctly?

DescriptionKeySet with codes that match what you show would do that.

Hi Jeff

The drawing file came from a no c3d source and the description key sets are blank?

Joe, it would be easiest if you asked your source for the LDT description keys.  C3D can import them and then you'll probably see the real descriptions.  What's going on here is C3D appears that it converts using the Raw description, where your LDT points are showing the Full descirption.

Joe,

You could open up your template drawing and copy paste the other drawing into it then run the ldt convert.

How do you import the LDT description keys? Not that I've had any need to recently, just curious.

Hi Dan

Here is a sample of the points I blocked out and inserted into our template. The raw descriptions keep changing. I have set ignore keys in the create point dialog while doing the conversion

Joe, C3D reads the Raw Description from LDT points. You will need to import the description keys used from LDT, if you have it, in order for C3D to give you the Full Descriptions. Here's a listing of one of the points:

AECC_POINT Layer: "V-PV-EP-P"
Space: Model space
Linetype scaling = 30.0000
Handle = c9f3
Text Location : (1067156.72, 215598.05, 138.12)
Text Rotation :
Normal : (0.00, 0.00, 1.00)
Group Name :
Point Number : 15440
Point Name :
Northing : 215598.05
Easting : 1067156.72
Elevation : 138.12 XDRef:
Raw Description : 509

XDRef:
Full Description : E/WALK
Marker Location : (1067156.72, 215598.05, 138.12)

Another thing to watch out for is that C3D also reads the Northing Easting information and not the insertion point. So if the points were moved or rotated in LDD and not checked into the database and reinserted in the drawing the conversion will use the old location. This also applies to points moved or rotated after insertion to C3D.

I took one of the points in Joe's drawing and moved it.

                  AECC_POINT  Layer: "V-TP-GRND-P"
                            Space: Model space
Linetype scaling =   30.0000
                   Handle = ca12
     Text Location : (1067351.11, 215614.83, 137.54)
     Text Rotation :
            Normal : (0.00, 0.00, 1.00)
        Group Name :
      Point Number : 15472
        Point Name :
          Northing : 215613.08
           Easting : 1067341.42
         Elevation : 137.54    XDRef:
   Raw Description : 810    XDRef:
  Full Description : GRND
   Marker Location : (1067351.11, 215614.83, 137.54)

See how the NE is different from the Marker Location. The conversion will use the NE so the point will be back at it's original location after conversion.

Joe,

Another option would be to open the drawing in Land and export a point file using a file format that uses full descriptions. Then import that point list in C3D.

Conference is good, Joe. Learning new things, as usual.

Do you still have the LDT project archived? You can import the Desrciption Keys from that project. Or, send me the drawing and I can export the points for you (I still have LDT2009 for testing things with)

If you need. Send me the file. I still have LDTC2009 running. Some of our projects are so old I need that to convert old Softdesk file to newer LDT files so I can convert to C3D.

I worked with Joe and unfortunately he had a Civil 3D drawing with LDD points pasted in, no original LDD file. The workaround was to copy the LDD points and convert the copies to Civil points. Then display the Civil points with a style with the description only at 180°.

That way you can see the original LDD point description plus the RAW description of the Civil points. Seeing the RAW description will allow building point groups based on those RAW descriptions. If point groups are created you'd be able to edit the RAW or Full description for the whole point group.
