Add Labels Dialog non-responsive

I need to add simple bearing and distance labels to some lines in a drawing.  But when I select "add labels" from the annotate tab, then "add line and curve labels" the command bar displays _AeccAddFeatureLineLabels but nothing happens.  

I created this document on another computer using AutoCAD 2011 (not civil 3d).  The strange thing is that ADDFEATURELINELABELS works fine in another drawing I have which was sent to me by a surveyor. 

What could be the difference?

I'm having simlar problems.

Select entiry

Entity must be line, polyline, etc.

Entity IS  a POLYline.

Why won't it label?

2d polylines (old style, or "Heavy") and 3d polylines won't label, only Lightweight polylines will accept a label.

Did you ever get a solution for this?

I've tried labeling feature lines projected to profiles, pipes in profiles, and alignment fixed point with the labeling feature refusing to work.

Just sent 2 people to a 3d class and asked them to ask the instructor.  Instructor said he had never heard of such a thing.
