Add a subgrade to a proposed surface

I have created an existing surface and a proposed surface and now I need to do a cut/fill comparison but the elevations of the proposed surface are at the top of the pavment and not the bottom of the subgrade. Is there an easy way to add the subgrade to the proposed surface or do I need to go to each spot elevation and drop it 8-12"?

How did you create this surface - corridor, gradings or some other method?

For general modelling of construction depths (typically not based on corridors), check out http://ericchappell.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/magical-way-to-calculate-volumes.html and post back if you have further queries.

create a new surface and paste the proposed surface into it.   now use the surface edit datum tool and drop the proposed surface down to the elevation of the subgrade.    Now compare the newly created surface with the existing surface.

if the volume needed is only within the extent of the roadway, a polygon can be drawn to extract a bounded volume of just the area needed.  good luck to you.

Thank you all. I created the surface using elevation points. I realize I should have used feature lines but there is some odd geometry and its a pretty large site. I'm going to give it a try today and hopefully see some success 🙂
