3d viewing in civil 3d

Just a random thought.... does anyone look at their models in 3d?  if so, how?  thru object viewer? thru a 3d view?

How good or bad is the performance when you try to rotate the view? is it slow? fast? cause crashes?

Just looking for everyone else's experience...  What ever your experience may be, at least let us know what OS and what graphics card you're using...

THANKS!

Kevin

It is essential that you look at your model in 3D as it is one of the best ways to see problems with the model.

I prefer to use the object viewer as it allows you to quickly inspect the model without having to reconfigure your design plane view orientation.

I've always had problems with Object viewer when using hardware acceleration as it tends to lock up easily so I always use software acceleration.

I've always looked at my models in 3d...learned that from Phil Zimmerman back in Softdesk days...

Back then just a Vpoint...then Object Viewer for parts...now in 2011 the Cube....

Thanks for the replies guys.  Can you tell me about your graphics performance?  Is it slow OR fast to rotate a 3d grading model, even a simple one with a pad and a C/F grading?

Thanks

Kevin

There are several variables that will affect display performance...Display drivers, GPU, memory, software settings, and drawing components. Viewing corridors can be especially slow using the default settings but supposedly by adjusting corridor settings it can be improved. Generally, for me, C3D performance is doggy, including 3D orbit, but my machine does not meet the recommended specs.

I used to have awful performance with 3D Orbit and the Object Viewer was unusable. I had to be very careful not to orbit too fast or it would crash. While looking for a solution I read the release notes for the Nvidia performance drivers. After doing a Manuel tune and changing the settings to match those suggested the difference was dramatic. One of the settings that seemed to have the most effect was to turn off Adaptive Degradation.

I use 3D Orbit and the Object viewer all the time now. While designing corridors I usually have a 2D view on one monitor and one or two 3D views on the other monitor.

I'm using an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4600, 768MB, driver Ver 6.14.0011.9178, Powerdraft OpenGL drivers Ver 17.2.2

Like the other's here I have always worked with a 3d view as well. You should also note that a small grading model with a ton of verticies/elv pnts/traingles is a large load on C3D. A ton of labels can also reduce performance. With that said, simple surfaces rotate in 3d well. Larger models take a few seconds to regen but they get there. I don't use the object viewer. I hold SHIFT & the moddle mouse button to invoke 3d orbit.

I have not experianced any great performance increase from xp32 to vista64 to win764. I think I just crash less with win7.

ddvpoint use to rule. 😉

I use the object viewer, C3D 2010.

Dell Precision PWS690 Dual Xeon 2.00 GHz 3GB ram  ATI fire GL V7200 ver 8.391.2.11

3d rotation is very fluid.   occasional crashes.   occasional missing 3d elements.
