3d terrain model

Hi,
I am a landscape architect. I am looking for a software that would enable me to transform digital terrain data into a 3d surface, drop a photo over it, add some buildings, and then analyse the terrain from the different viewpoints. Would Civil 3d 2008 be suitable for this purpose? If not would you recommend me any other software that would be helpful. Thank you for any help!

Civil 3D definitely could do that for you. However, it may be a bit overkill. There may be some cheaper software that could do it although I don't know of any (working for an Autodesk reseller, I don't use much software that isn't Autodesk). As far as the buildings go, if they are very simple buildings that you build using the AutoCAD commands, or that you get from someone else, Civil 3D would work but if you are trying to design your buildings, use something else like AutoCAD Architecture or Revit Architecture.

Sketchup can do what you're asking, although keep in mind that is NOT (nor
is it intended to be) a high-end package. I'm not a user of it, but I
regularly deal with some folks who love it. They have experienced some
frustration due to unreasonable expectations on their part, though.

Be sure to factor in what type of sites you are dealing with.
