3D Polyline editing tools?

Autodesk: Please add to the next release of Civil 3D the 3D polyline
editing tools which are available in the Land Desktop Terrain pull-down
menu. This would make creating a site grading model in C3D much easier.
"Join 3dPolylines", "Add/Weed Vertices", etc.

Thanks,
Dave D.

The Autodesk folks are aware of this need, so these tools will will probably
show up in a future version. That said, you can actually do quite a bit of
grading without them. Just convert a 2D polyline to a grading feature line,
and use the Elevation Editor to set elevations and grades along it. The
biggest limitation I see to doing this is that the elevation editor does not
give you any visual indicator to show you which control point you are
currently editing, so if you have a feature line with more than 4 or 5 of
them, it gets pretty confusing...

Hope this helps,

Ok, thanks for the responses. I'm fortunate enough to have a dual monitor
setup so when I have the need to use the 3D polyline features, I usually
have Land Desktop active on one monitor and Civil 3D open on the other.
Then just do copy and paste between the two. But I know there has got to be
a better way.

BTW: using feature lines should also eliminate the need for the Add & Weed
Vertices commands...

Hi Dave,

I haven't looked at Civil 3D in intimate detail yet, but I suspect that the
intent of the software is not to use 3D polylines as a design tool, but an
Object called a Feature Line.

You can create a feature line from existing drafted AutoCAD 2D objects.
There after the help reads as follows:

To edit a feature line with the Elevation Editor
1.. Click Grading menu Elevation Editor.
2.. In the drawing, select the feature line or lot line you want to edit.
3.. Make the changes to elevation in the Grading Elevation Editor dialog
box.
The base line or target line is updated in the drawing, and the grading is
adjusted.

To edit a feature line from the command line
1.. Click Grading menu Edit Elevations.
2.. In the drawing, select the feature line you want to edit.
Prompting starts at the elevation point closest to where you click the
line.

3.. Enter the changes to the feature line elevations.
Enter a value and press Enter to modify the elevation or grade and stay at
the current point. The updated value is displayed.

4.. Press Enter without entering a value to move from point to point along
the feature line.
As you make each change, the feature line is updated in the drawing and
the grading is adjusted. You can also add intermediate elevation points.

I have done some experimental drafting with a multi-curved LWpolyline which
I turned into a feature line and use as a breakline in a DTM. Essentially
the DTM was reacting (rebuild needed - but that didn't take long) to changes
I made to the levels and grades (as well as the plan location changes made
by dragging vertices) within the feature line created from the poyline and
edited as above.

I haven't tried feature lines. I'll have to give it a try. We bought an add on called geotools for this, but I'm sure there are others out their. Maybe even some freeware.

Hi Kevin,

Some time in the next week or so there will be more extensive documentation
of this process on our web site under Tech Tips. I did the first print out
of the tip today and will be review/editing ready for posting ASAP.

There are still some limitations in the ability of grading objects to
replace the "Create curb" command in complex situations, but as most of our
clients are buying Stringer these days and stringer has a betterr "Create
Curbs" process, it's not a worry in Australia. Alos Stringer has a far
better Join Polyline command than Land Desktop. These commands can be used
in Civil 3D as well as Land Desktop.

You can join 3d polylines just by using the edit feature lines-join command. Also, feature lines will explode to 3d polylines.

Are you looking at like page 500 of the forums or something??

This thread was over 5 years old and I am quite sure it did not have to be bumped......
