2011LT Zoom and Pan freeze

Zoom in (as when setting a node), then zoom out, pan, zoom into another place, set node, zoom out, pan... no movement.  I can zoom in, zoom out, pan to another area and zoom in, etc., only briefly, say, twice or three times; then the zooming and panning lock and I must REGENALL before proceeding.  This becomes irritating within a command, as when setting nodes, because after the regen, the original command must be re-started.  

Is there a way to increase the amont of panning and zooming we can do before we lock up and have to REGENALL?  This happens in small, simple drawings as well as in large complex ones.  I suspect it's some sysvar, as the RAM and graphics card are easily able to handle this material.
