CreateFile failed with error 3

First off I am running...

Civil 3D 2009 with update 1
Win XP Pro SP3
HP dc5800
Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz
3.5GB of ram
FireGL 3600

This just started happening two weeks ago, nothing had changed on the system and everything was running well. After I get this error, Civil 3D and Land desktop are both unusable and continue to display error and crash every time they are opened. I have already run a repair on the software but it has no effect on the error. The only fix I have found, not that I consider it a fix, is a full uninstall, registery clean and reinstall. The problem is every week this error pops up, so I have had to "fix" the software 4 times in two weeks.

When the error starts the following happens every time I open Civil 3D.

Upon opening civil 3d 2009 I start getting errors popping up while loading is occurring. This is before I open any files.

These are the error message popups I get...
cid:image001.png@01C91C2C.410141F0
CreateFile failed with error 3: the system cannot find the path specified.

WriteFile failed with error 6: the handler is invalid

Mapviewoffile failed with error 6: the handle is invalid

I get these a couple times over until the program crashes with a ...

fatal error: unhandled access violation writing 0x0000 exception at 7814500ah

Thanks,

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 according to "Clean Installation Guide"?

It seems to be crucial to delete the whole content of the Windows Temp folder.

Thanks for the response. Yes I have, but I do not consider this to be a solution. I have done this before and yes the software works again but if you start from scratch you haven't solved the problem you just bought yourself some time. I know because I have bought myself some time 5 times now. I have performed a full clean install 5 times in the past 3 weeks due to this error.

Thanks again,

We have also encountered this issue with 3 out of 5 computers in our office. We are using the networked license version and have SP2 for Civil 2009 installed. One of the users has had this occour twice now. Could someone at AutoDesk look into this, it's becoming very disapointing as we have high hopes for this package.

For any one else that stumbles across this.....

I believe that this error is caused by the Temp folder filling
up with temp files from when C3D doesn't close normally. C3D creates MANY temp
files with each drawing opened and will usually purge them when the dwg is
closed, but during a crash they get left behind. These files start with
pnt0000.tmp & tri0000.tmp, are a total of 7 characters in length and
most are 0 bytes in size. Once the program reaches pntFFFF or triFFFF (it
counts in hexadecimal) it can not create any new files and it crashes with these
error messages. Deleting all of these files will again allow you to
work.

I just removed 132,000 files form my Temp folder (not all of
these were from C3D, but a HUGE number of them were) and I no longer received
this error.

HTH,

Jeff

I was getting that same error message this morning after a crash-filled afternoon yesterday.

Found this thread, ran CC Cleaner to purge all files from the temp folders, and voila - up and running again, no problem.

I'm sure manually deleting the contents of the temp folder would work just as well, but I can justify the extra coffee break while CC Cleaner diligently cleans up my drive for me 🙂

One of our machines has the same problem

I have been clearing the temp folder to keep the user working. I have uninstalled Civil 3D 2010 and reinstalled it. It has the latest service pack (service pack 3 released yesterday). In the first two hours of today just over 18000 temp files have been created. At some stage 690 files were created in 60 seconds.

Can anyone give me ideas how to fix the routine that creates the temp files.
