A C3D or Acad dwg ?

Is there a way to determine whether a drawing just opened is an AutoCAD dwg or Civil 3D dwg ?

Keep in mind that a Civil 3D dwg can be a dwt without any objects.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

We just don't want anyone to open a C3D dwg file in AutoCAD and save and vice versa.

Hi there,

check the “named object dictionary” in the database and look to see if contains an object named “Root”. Civil 3D creates that object when initializes a drawing, and at a very low-level, it is the entry point to all Civil objects (not that you want to use that stuff directly)

For more details see this Blog post by my colleague Isaac -

Hope this helps!

Thanks,
