Multileader geometry is not showing

I am trying to create a bubble using the basic circle block option in multileader style dialog box, but only the tag shows, never the circle... or any other geometry for that matter. Same thing with a custom user block. Any ideas how to fix this?

Found the answer through some trial and error. The multileader needs to be set as "Annotative" under 'leader structure' tab.
