AutoCAD MAP Clipping Functionality

I wish ADT could be enabled to clip drawings as easily as AutoCAD MAP does.

There is not an architect that I know who does not have to work with site
plans and most complain that ADT does not have the same clipping abilities
as MicroStation.

I am sure that this would also be useful for users for extracting specific
zones and sectors from drawings to create new drawings and presentation
graphics.

I don't think that it is fair that ADT users should have to shell out for a
full MAP licence just to do this. It would be suitable even if the MAP
functions were available as an AutoCAD/ADT module.

Hi

Why not add all the map ADE functions to ADT to allow a team to work on the
same drawing/drawing at the same time. This is very powerful technology
allowing queries across "databases" of drawings. With ADE, it is possible to
update all occurrences of a door through all of the plans of a 20 story
building in one shot. Really useful if a property set needs to be updated
throughout a model, across all xref files.

It is also possible to setup a query structure of the building model data set
by spatial, by trade, by manufacturer, in fact by any property defined in the
model data set. e.g. create a view of all the spaces that have a area of less
that 3 square meter across the model data set and change their colour
representation to magenta. Different project teams would work on different
aspects of the building at the same time.

Also would be very useful for extracting quantity data out of a model data set
(I define a model data set is the collection of dwg files that go to make up a
project). With ADE, an example query would be to extract the surface area of
the all walls across all project dwg files which are painted BS colour 04 B15
and then change all areas less that 10 square meters to colour BS 08B15. Or
change the locks on doors of 910mm width, on levels 2 4 5 6 7, with a fire
rating of 1.5 hours from brand Y to brand X.

Powerful stuff, especially for Facility Management.

This technology has been around in the AutoDesk World for a long time (like 10
years) and I do not understand why it has not been implemented in the ADT
environment. It would need appropriate AEC usability but would blow things
like ArchiCAD's Teamwork out of the water.

Any comments welcome

Kerry,

I totally agree. This should have been the very first distinguishing
feature to mark the release of a post S8 Architectural product. Everything
else (in my opinion) should have been secondary. It's the only way a single
building model will ever begin to make any sense, no matter how cool walls,
doors, etc. may be.

This isn't the first time it's been mentioned. It's been wished for since
opening day of ADT 1.0

Hi Brian

Interesting, I heard just recently that there was a possibly of the AutoCAD
engine could have been based on Map, but for some reason they did not do it. Be
very interesting to know why not? - Map works the same as AutoCAD but using the
ADE functions turns it into very powerful database which would provide a
framework for objects.
